About the Author

Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is also the puzzlemaster on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday and is founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. He has edited countless books of crossword puzzles, Sudoku, KenKen, and all manner of brain-busters.

What they aren't telling you

If you regularly do NYT Sunday puzzles you know about the quality (high) and difficulty level (middling).

What you may not know about this book is just exactly what puzzles are in it!

It covers the period from September 5, 2010 through December 30, 2012. That would have been about 120 Sundays by my math, so you can see that Shortz and co. have selected 75 from that period.

There may be overlap with other Sunday collections that have been recently issued (Whatever happened to Look Inside This Book, so we can check the colophon pages, St.Martin's Griffin?) since NYT sometimes has a bad habit of putting the same puzzles in multiple books. I'd specifically be wary of Sweet Sunday Crosswords and Surrender To Sunday Crosswords -- if you have either of those books, check their colophon pages before buying this one if you're concerned about seeing the same puzzles twice.

Another fine Will Shortz Book; wish formatting/set were improved

Smart Sunday Crosswords is a delightful collection of puzzles consisting of the best of the New York Times. To add to its charm, this book's size lends itself to easy travel, so you can keep it on hand whenever you have a few moments to work on a puzzle. As anyone familiar with Will Shortz and the Times puzzles would expect, this is a book filled with quality puzzles. Rest assured this latest edition will keep you amused for many Sundays, or any other day of the week. My one complaint is I wish the book were larger so the clues and crossword spaces were on the same page.

Perfection

The format is perfect; excellent size for traveling, yet each puzzle is presented on two pages (clues on one page, grid on the other), so puzzle squares are roomy and you can easily read the clues. And of course, what's not to love about The NY Times' Sunday theme puzzles.

Disappointing

In the last 100 years far more people have been killed in mass atrocities than in actual warfare. Recurrent cruelty on a massive scale is an urgent problem which mankind has failed to solve. Taylor comes to this subject claiming that her expertise in neuroscience will give new understanding. But she writes in a self-indulgent style in which large quantities of speculation are mixed with the results of her reading. Repetitive and rambling text with asides of doubtful relevance and an occasional lacing of feminism make the book an irritating read. I am not fond of fiction as evidence in a scientific context. Shakespeare's Othello is stunning literature but not scientific evidence. Other quotations are used frustratingly, often leaving a question floating rather than adding to understanding. "A benchmark study of sexual behaviour" (p 204) from which she quotes precise-sounding percentages turns out to be the fraudulent work of Alfred Kinsey. Even a glance at Wikepedia would have raised suspicion. It is difficult to know how much Taylor accepts Freud's theories. Many intelligent people do, but mainstream scientists are deeply sceptical. The irritating use of endnotes is sadly not just a feature of this book. Disrupting one's reading to flip to the note may yield only a source reference, or stuff which should either be omitted or put in the main text, or a comment without which the main text cannot be understood. This is bad editing as well as lack of organization and discipline by the author.
Expect plenty of the sort of stuff you might get by discussing the subject with an intelligent friend, plus references to literature you may not know. In that sense you will have mulled over many angles of the subject. Do not expect your understanding to be enhanced greatly in a scientific sense, because the small amount of neuroscience does not increase understanding as much as you might think. Sadly, the impression is that this book is the product of the urge to follow up a previous best-seller rather than of mature scholarship and an incisive mind.

A margin-wrecker: the best kind of book is one that begs to be marked up

It's odd -- maybe not that odd -- that a book about cruel, base and disgusting acts would emerge as one of my favorites of all time.

The author, Kathleen Taylor (funny that two of my favorite authors are named Kathleen) is a neuroscientist at Oxford. She brings together the latest in the fledgling field of neuroscience with evolutionary theory, social and cultural anthropology and biologic processes to bring cruelty to life -- what it is and why we have it -- and helps readers arrive at a better understanding of what it means to be human. She has a vivid, technically precise and funny writing style that kept me hooked and kept me scribbling frantically in the margins as new ideas skittered away.

Cruelty, she argues, is linked to the uniquely human desire to predict and control the natural world. That can be as basic as avoiding dangerous predators or as refined as protecting belief systems important to our culture. And, she says, "...our hunger for control does not demand that our predictions are actively confirmed, just that they remain unchallenged."

Challenged, we are "...vulnerable to symbolic threats which cause us no physical harm." But because of the way our brains are wired, "...conflict feels stressful, like pain, and most people prefer to avoid it."

According to Taylor, we act against symbolic threats the same way our bodies act against dangerous diseases - "learn the warning signs, avoid the source, quarantine the infected and expel the contaminant." It's the same approach, and the same language (a blight upon our culture, threats to our way of living), that have been used to tragic result for those considered dangerous for centuries.
It's all tied to our biologic responses because, she argues, the symbolic brain is an extension of the physical brain. The same systems we use to deal with ingesting putrid food are high jacked by the brain when we encounter a putrid belief system that is, challenging to our symbolic health. It's the only system we have in place to deal with a threat that makes us feel sick.

"When it unwelcome ideas require extensive and effortful thought to accommodate them, it becomes easier not to bother changing the brain, but instead to shape the world to fit - by removing the irritant source of challenging signals."

That ties into one of my favorite lines, explaining why we (and I am certainly guilty of this) lash out at inanimate objects. "Broken gadgets can be expected not to work; unbroken gadgets should work; unbroken gadgets which should work and don't are infuriating misfits, to be treated accordingly."

Magnify that by the effort we expend mitigating against people who challenge our beliefs. "The more important the beliefs in question, the more strongly they will be defended, the more extreme emotion which a challenge will provoke and the more violent the response is likely to be."

We react to symbolic threats with mental acrobatics and, occasionally, the kind of violence usually reserved for physical threats, because that's all we know how to do. Just like "dogs that achieve nothing by barking at passing fire-engines, though the noise does recede, so perhaps they think they do," we protect our core beliefs at all costs, even though the strategies we employ may have no influence and in fact may run counter to those very beliefs.

She argues that, "Cruelty, thus, is as natural as laziness or competitiveness. It protects the precious self, physical or symbolic, by doing harm to those about whom we care less." Cruelty, then, is basically a too-aggressive response from our symbolic immune system.

It's a wild, funny, terrifying scientific ride through sadism and evil and pain and suffering and threat responses and neural pathways and a human history filled with tragic examples of cruelty. Rather than dark or depressing, I found it liberating and hopeful. The more we can understand the mechanisms of cruelty, the easier it will be to untangle them from misguided cultural beliefs and poorly understood biological functions. Cruelty may be part of the human condition, but refusing to act upon it may be one of our great accomplishments.

Pleasurable read-- very insightful!

I was a little ambivalent about this when I first picked it up, but I couldn't put it down. I found it to be extremely engaging and thought-provoking-- a lot of the historical examples are extremely prophetic of what is going on in the world today. I highly recommend this title for anyone who is interested in the psychology of violence, war, and inhumanity.

Not for "actual" records........

I was really excited about getting this book and once I opened it, I quickly discovered that this was NOT what I was hoping it would be! If you're looking for "records" such as "Best-selling LIPS track" or "First Xbox 360 Movie Karaoke Game" then you're in LUCK! And yes,...those ARE, in fact, actual records included in this book. You can find records of best scores and such, but they are included at the very end and are hardly even recognized. All in all, I should've sent the book back, but maybe my 9 year old nephew will like it?!

lazy, blatant marketing

What can I say, picked this up at a garage sale. Upon opening the book it was very clear why it was there. It is a very lazy effort, with mostly records such as "Best Selling __________" or "First ___________".

Some of the lists provided are things that are subjective and are strangely places in a record book. Most of these lists also seem to lean toward the promotion of current games. If you are looking for something meaningful to an actual gamer stay away, if you are looking for an advertizement in book form then this is right up your alley.

About the Author

Douglas Kirkland joined Look Magazine in his early twenties, and worked for Life Magazine during the golden age of 1960s-1970s photojournalism. Among his assignments were international features as well as fashion and celebrity work, photographing such luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich. Through the years, Kirkland has worked on the sets of hundreds of motion pictures. His fine arts photography has been exhibited all over the world, and is in the permanent collections of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, the Smithsonian, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, England. A sought-after lecturer, Kirkland has received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the American S.O.C., Photographer of the Year from the PMA, a Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from CAPIC in his native Canada. At one hundred and sixty pages, this oversized tabletop hardbound targets those that enjoy beautiful depictions of floral designs that have been altered. Complete with a clear plastic protective cover, illustrations grace almost every page. With no table of contents or index to look up the flower’s name, the book ends with acknowledgments.

Author and professional fine art photographer Oliphant has been taking pictures of fashion, commercial, and nature for over forty years. This being his first publication of photography, he focuses on a topic that has touched his heart for decades: flowers.

After a forward by Russell Hart and an introduction, there are almost one hundred and fifty pages of artworks showing blooming flowers. Some flowers include the allium, anthurium, bleeding heart, calla lily, cosmos, dahlia, hibiscus, orchid, rose, tulip, and zinnia. While there are four pages dedicated to one type of flower that has both its botanical and common names, there may be six pages concentrating on another or more than one set of dahlias or roses illustrated.

Instead of taking the standard artistic approach, the photographer has produced pictures that are over-saturated, over-exposed, and diffused that may initially seem awkward to the viewer. However, keeping the pages open explores the exquisiteness of the incredible colors, textures, and designs found on a petal or stamen.

Floral close-ups in unusual colors

Solarization is a photographic process in which the dark and light areas of the object being photographed are reversed; if done in color, the colors are reversed or otherwise altered. The effect originally occurred when film was exposed to sunlight for too long or at the wrong time in the photographic process, hence the name. It was known from the earliest days of photography, in the 19th century, and was used extensively by surrealist photographer Man Ray in the early 20th century. The results are variable but can be extremely striking.

Happily for those of us with no darkroom skills, solarization can now be applied with one click as a filter in Photoshop. I’m sure that Brad Oliphant used much more complex techniques, however. Here he presents close-up photographs of flowers in pairs (that is, two copies of the same photograph, sometimes with size or directionality altered), with each photo of the pair shown in a different mixture of color and grayscale. The results are quite lovely, featuring brilliant colors, extremely crisp edges, and interesting contrasts. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes floral macrophotographs and wants to see an unusual way of handling this often-used subject.

My only criticism, fairly minor, is that the book is somewhat padded in that each pair of photos is prefaced by another two-page spread that contains nothing but the name of the flower (common and scientific) and smaller copies of the full-page photos that follow. The name of the flower could have been put above the full-page photos, making this extra spread unnecessary—which would have left room for additional pairs of beautiful full-page photos if Mr. Oliphant had them.

As an artist, color is a thing of magic in my life. Color creates shapes, forms, and feelings in the artworks I paint. Laying color onto a blank page is when I feel closest to true magic, when I feel happiest and most relaxed, and it's through what I create that I share my love of magic with the world.

Through my coloring books I want to share that same magic with you.The artworks in my books are based on my completed paintings, which I have painted over the last ten years as a professional artist. I have created the coloring designs to be intricate and detailed but still fun and accessible. There is something for lovers of meditative detail while simple enough to not be overwhelming for younger colorists.

When designing my books I decided to print them with two copies of each design, because I know as an artist there are always so many possibilities! I wanted to give everybody the chance of a do-over with every design. Try a different medium, or a different colour scheme. Or a chance to share the magic with a friend, child, parent, sibbling. Because sharing your creativity and joy of color is the best magic of all.

Beautifully Drawn Mermaids...

Summary:
"Mythical Mermaids" contains two copies each of 25 different images, 3 pages of introductory material, and a biographical page in the back. It measures 8.5 x 11 inches and is glue bound in a matte finish cover. Featuring black and white line drawings, this book is appropriate for colorists 16+ on all skill levels.

Paper:
The paper in this book is bright white and slightly heavier than standard copy weight. All pages are single sided and non-perforated. Since the pages are blank on one side, all mediums can be used, but wet products will bleed through and may cause some wrinkling. Be sure to place several sheets of blotter paper under your picture to prevent color transfer onto the next page.

Artwork:
As with Selina Fenech's other work, "Mythical Mermaids" focuses on fantasy inspired imagery. Inside you'll see mermaids in a variety of poses and themes. Some are alone and some are in pairs or sets of 3. There are a few mermen thrown in for good measure, and several humans being rescued from drowning as well. Some of the pictures are very beautiful and light, while others feel a bit darker with skulls and pirate paraphernalia. Line weight does vary within each image and print quality is high. Some of the artwork is surrounded by a thin black border and all of it ends before entering the binding of the book. Detail level remains fairly high throughout and picture completion time should range from 4-8 hours(may be slightly different for each individual). Overall, this book doesn't disappoint. It would be best suited for artists who enjoy coloring nautical or fantasy imagery.

25 x 2 Mythical and Beautiful Mermaid Fantasy Designs – printed on one side of page

[[VIDEOID:e32a951f782bb671b327a54ebbab0744]]“Mythical Mermaids” the latest fantasy coloring book by Selina Fenech. She is one of my favorite fantasy designers and this is my first book by her that is devoted to mermaids (though she does have an earlier coloring book with a similar subject.) The designs are of primarily mermaids though there are some mermen and a man or two who has been saved from a watery grave by a beautiful mermaid. Some of the designs include more than one mermaid but most of them focus on a single beautiful female.

Once again with Ms. Fenech's books, I'm really happy that the book contains two of each design because it gives me the opportunity to explore each in different colorways. I generally go towards light and clean looking lines in my coloring but having a second copy of each design gives me an opportunity to try different techniques and darker colors and heavier shading.

The mermaids are all gorgeous, of course. There is a hint of nudity but all of the female parts are well covered by hair and whatnot. The mermen are without shirts but that doesn't really matter in any case. There are no children in this book and most of the poses are highly romanticized while stressing the female form of the subject.

For my first two projects, I chose to use alcohol-based markers. I have been using pencils to shade but for these two, I tried using my markers for shading as well.

I will provide a more detailed description of the physical book below but here is a quick overview of what I found:

25 x 2 Mermaid Fantasy Designs

Printed on one side of page

Paper is white, thin, slightly rough (tooth) and non-perforated

Designs do not merge into the binding and there is plenty of room to remove pages if you wish to do so.

Glue Binding

Alcohol and water-based markers bleed through the paper (though water-based is more spotty compared to alcohol-based)

India ink pens and gel pens leave shadows on color on back of the page. Gel pens left dents on the back of the page.

Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I was able to put down good color, layer, and blend well with both wax and oil based pencils. Hard lead left dents on the back of the page.

I recommend a blotter page below your working page to keep ink and dents from marring the page below.

The artist has placed a “frame” around the majority of the designs in this coloring book. There are three that do not have the lines but for the most part have finished elements on the outer edges of the design. I really appreciate when an artist includes this thoughtful touch. It makes it easier for me to complete the project with a finished look and saves me time, trouble, and especially ink.

As with Selinas previous books, Mythical Mermaids is a subtle deep blue with a partially coloured image from the interior on the cover.�
The soft matte card cover is 27.9cm x 21.6cm and the book is 108 pages. The spine is glue bound, and quite pliable after some use.�
The paper is of moderate thickness and texture. A number of layers are easily achieved on the paper, with both oil and wax based pencils. Waterbased markers shadow, any other wet media will bleed. Make sure to have a few pages of standard paper behind the image to catch any bleedthrough.
Images are single sided, and surrounded by a border to prevent the image from entering the spine. The facing page has the name of the image for easy reference to the original. This book contains , 25 different images, each one repeated, for a total of 50 images.

As the title suggests, this is a book full of mermaids. The artwork has been converted from the original artwork done by Selina Fenech. The art style is consistent throughout the images.
The artwork varies quite a bit, with singular mermaids staring through the page, mermaids embracing, spunky mermaids showing attitude, others swimming around a sunken ship.�
The line thickness is consistently thin throughout, although the artwork is clean and consistent, so it is not difficult to see and interpret the images.�

The natural colour schemes that accompany mermaid/nautical scenes is quite soothing and would be very well suited for times of anxiety or pain, or just a low day.
The fantasy theme is one of my favourites when you are in need of distraction, as the imagery and theme is perfect for escapism.

David Chappell is director of David Chappell Consultancy Limited, sometime Professor and Senior Research Fellow in Architectural Practice and Management Research at the Queen’s University Belfast, and Visiting Professor of Practice Management and Law at the University of Central England in Birmingham. Excellent story in two perspectives

This is a tale old twice, of a man that wants to try things from a female perspective, and his wife that wants to try the male side.

After receiving a mysterious button, they get a chance to. Told first from the m2f perspective, this story the resells itself from the much rarer f2m perspective.

Despite having a lot of the same events, the different perspectives keep things different enough you don't feel like you a reading the same story twice.

An excellent work that I plan on re-reading some day soon.

A lovely tale, both romantic and erotic

Ashley and Camero are a happily married couple who met because of their shared appreciation for the flexibility of gender and gender roles. It's allowed them to incorporate a lot of role playing and fetish foreplay in their relationship, but things have become somewhat tired and commonplace after the years.

That's when The Button arrives on their doorstep, along with a mysterious letter promising them the chance to live out their fantasies . . . for real . . . just once . . . with the guarantee of a return to their original bodies.

Zoe S. Figueroa has subtitled this A Gender Transformation Novella Told From Parallel Perspectives, and that is fitting. There are actually two stories here, allowing us to experience the gender swap from both perspectives. It is a lovely tale, both romantic and erotic, with a wonderful approach to the idea of parallel lives and parallel memories.

The ending is absolutely perfect, but I would recommend reading the stories in parallel to preserve the mystery.
