Positively Influence Your Project, Your Organization, and Your Career

Ah, organizational politics. Depending on where you work, it's the "dirty little secret" or the "elephant in the room" that can lift a project to unparalleled success or kill it dead without mercy. Today's project manager has to wear many hats: director, producer, human resources coordinator, line supervisor, financial manager, etc. The hat that's often overlooked, however, is the flat top, paper-rimmed topper that signifies "campaign manager".

Colin Gautrey's latest book, "A Project Manager's Guide to Influence", takes on the politics of project management as a foundational reality, and helps you navigate its pathways to build and grow your influence in a way that will have positive impact on your project and your organization's leadership vision. Through a series of practical chapters discussing the role of influence on your supervisors, peers and team members, the book takes provides an overview of stakeholders that is probably the most realistic you will ever find. You will then participate in a series of practical exercises to think through these relationships and identify how to work within those political constructs.
Favorite chapters:
Chapter 2, featuring the exercise "Reflecting on your reality": This was a chapter that I spent a little time in the morning with, sipping a nice cup of tea, and really thinking about what I knew, what I didn't know, and how I could identify the opportunities and challenges ahead in my project. The Stakeholder Influence process diagram is an excellent bonus.
Chapter 9: Advocates, Critics, Players and Enemies. Very important to understand the landscape you are working within and excellent advice on working with all of these groups to move your project forward. This helped me put the stakeholder list in focus.
Chapter 11: Building High Quality Relationships: projects come and go, but the opportunity to build relationships that will help you beyond your project is very important, given the fluidity of the modern workplace.
All the "Coffee Break" sections: these one page reflections appear throughout the book and provide ways of thinking about common concerns facing project managers, from working with remote team members to dealing with your emotions as a project manager.
As I once heard in a song, "Politics is the art of the possible." Easy Read Great Tool

I was one of the first to purchase this book. It is a very easy read and funny. The author is very personable and it's like having an eye-opening experience with a friend. This book has lots of work sheets and valuable information. I am currently using the book for my business and weight loss goals.... I am a person who prides herself on having everything "together". This book is a great tool to keep me on track and focused on my goals. I highly recommend this book.

Buy it and read it BEFORE your children are teens!!!

What an encouraging and challenging book for parents. Tripp doesn't pull any punches in this outstanding book that challenges parents to be more deliberate and intentional about their parenting. The primary emphasis of the book is getting through to parents that raising children is not about how they look, how well they score on some standardized test, or how many touchdowns they score, but ultimately if they have a heart for God. Tripp first deals with the perspective of parents on this issue refocusing them on what's really important, then he dives in to encourage parents to pursue their teens and accept this stage of parenting as a God-given opportunity instead of dreading it and working to avoid it at all costs.

Tripp encourages parents to find a balance between protecting them from the world and allowing them to assimilate themselves into the world. Tripp knows that many parents of teens are tired and worn out - but he thinks that the reason is because they are spending too much time and energy addressing the wrong thing. Tripp warns parents that they should not focus on behavior modification, but be willing to spend the time and energy to find out the root causes which underlie their behavior. One theme constantly running through Age of Opportunity is the emphasis given to conversation - parents making the effort to talk with their children

While the intended audience is parents with teenage children, much of the sage advice is applicable to parents with any age children and the book might be a better read for parents before their children hit the teen years. Outstanding book, easy-to-read, biblically sound, challenging and encouraging - Age of Opportunity has my highest recommendation.

About the Author
Dr. Fiona Challacombe is a research fellow, clinical psychologist, and part of a specialist service treating individuals with severe and complex OCD. Her research focuses on the impact of OCD on parenting and families and investigating the delivery and refinement of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for parents with OCD. Dr. Victoria Bream Oldfield is a clinical psychologist whose research interests are in the phenomenology and treatment of OCD. Professor Paul Salkovskis is a professor of clinical psychology and applied science, editor of the scientific journal Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy and the author of Frontiers of Cognitive Therapy. He has published more than 250 scientific papers and recently received the Aaron T. Beck award for contributions to cognitive therapy.

Finally, equal emphasis on the cognitive aspect of OCD treatment,MUST READ

This book should be a must read for every Cognitive Behavioral Therapist in training,and obviously is a must have for ANY OCD sufferer. I thought I would check it out because of one of the authors, Dr. Paul Salkovskis of the UK, is referenced in most OCD books out there and is a pioneer in the treatment of intrusive thoughts and OCD. Thank god I did.

Somewhere along the long way, the American style of treating OCD has been completely over run with an almost obsessive focus on habituation and has lost sight of the human condition. To the point that the cognitive facet of cognitive behavioral therapy has been discounted,minimized, and deluded to the extent of it becoming basically just another form of habituation. in other words, on this side of the pond, the "authorities" on OCD will haphazardly point out the cognitive model in treating OCD, but will undermine it at every turn and spout out sayings like "habituation is the only option" The Beckian style of identifying and changing your reactions to hot cognitions, which fuel OCD, takes a back seat, and even worse is discouraged against. This basically ignores how anxiety and the mind work,

This book brings you back to the real world and makes it abundantly clear that we as people are completely capable of responding or not responding to any thought that pops into our minds, as we see fit, no matter how compelling or scary the content is. You will learn that is ok to ignore these thoughts, yes I said ignore, no dancing around it. I mention this, because this choice needs to be made clear to sufferers who have been inundated with all kinds of theories at this point, most of which directly contradict themselves when in the heat of battle. And besides, that's how the mind works, you either attend to a thought or you don't, you either make it important or you don't, anything beyond that only brings more undue attention to the faulty process and grants it even higher priority processing status. The authors obviously have a thorough understanding and compassion for all forms of OCD and not just classic washers and checkers. This is without a doubt the best explanation of how OCD manifests itself, how it is maintained. and how it is treated.
