ok to buy used copies, no supplemental materials
By Amazon Creek
As far as I can tell this is an excellent book. I gave it one star to call attention to two things.

1. WTF. This book is horrifically over-priced. It does not provide new access to engineering equations or a cure for cancer that was published last week. It is a Spanish grammar reference for crying out loud. I paid over $80.00 for it. Most of us are having to buy it as required for a college curriculum. Like the cost of the US medical system, this is one of those "something is wrong here" moments. That is just the painful truth.

2. It is a good idea to buy the used version of the edition you need. I did not. There were used versions available on Amazon for more than $20/less per copy, but when I went to buy, on checkout I found the used books had caveats, error messages, on the order of "Used version does not include online text key or supplemental materials."

Since in the past I had gotten stuck buying used textbooks and then finding out I was missing vital supplemental materials, I decided to play it safe and buy the new version. When I got my copy however, I found a that there are in fact no supplemental materials attached to this book. It is just a book. The caveats are meaningless, so you can get the whole package in a used version at a lower price. I suggest you do so.

With this, my own caveat rendered, I give this book back the rest of its stars, *****, for the hard work of its authors, who I doubt extremely are getting rich by the over-pricing of this book.

The Swiss Army Knife Spanish Grammar Manual
By Nerdo
This book is a must for any serious Spanish Major/minor, graduate student, and even those who are interested in learning the intrinsic grammatical nuances of the Spanish language. From its inception to this 4th edition the book keeps demonstrating that it is on top of the game. The authors, having listened to their readers and students, implemented thorough yet simple down to earth explanation of grammar structures and usage. This book belongs on your shelf beside your Diccionario de la Real Academia Espaola, El diccionario de uso del espaol de Mara Moliner, and your MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. The exercises and writing suggestions are current and should I dare say, fun? This is the book to own.

From ancient times to the present, great sieges have had an enormous impact on the shaping of world history. Now, in this spectacular, fully-illustrated volume, one hundred of the world's most monumental and mind-boggling sieges are laid out in detail.

Besieged covers the most important sieges from around the world throughout history--from Joshua's assault on Jericho in the fifteenth century B.C. to the Russian attack on the Chechen capital of Grozny at the end of the twentieth. Each entry provides the name and date of the siege, its exact location in terms of today's world, the number of forces engaged, when known, the names of the commanders on each side, and the overall importance of the siege in its historical context. Thoroughly examining the actions of both the attackers and the defenders, the book explores the motivations of both, and strategically surveys the technical and tactical innovations and conditions both inside besieged positions and in the besiegers' ranks. The entries detail the historical setting, the particular circumstances of the event itself, and the long-term results of the siege. These riveting accounts are enhanced by illustrations, over seventy maps, and references for further reading. A glossary and a comprehensive index complete the book.

Great summary of a lot of history
By J. Adams
This book is not the typical tedious history of great detail about important events which changed the world. Few of the battles take more than a few pages. It covers, as the title says, seiges from Jerico to Sarajevo. While there are some of the more savage ones missing, such as when a Mongol army commanded by Tolui, son of Genghis Khan, besieged Merv in February 1221. Its peaceful surrender was followed by the the beheading of hundreds of thousands of residents, according to most Islamic historians, with each of the Khan's soldiers obligated to chop off the heads of at least 300 men, women, and children. Some put the death toll over 500,000.
But this is still a very interesting book and well worth having on any shelf as a quick reference of history-changing battles. Each battle analysis includes the long or short term impact of the event.

Paul Davis - Besieged
By Stephan Cooper
After reading about Charles Martell and the Battle of Tours, I was directed to this book by Paul Davis. Mr. Davis is a Military Historian who can detail the event and make it come alive. I have read 4 of his books now and I am impressed with his knowledge and his reasoning.

Review

“Overall, I think this book would be helpful for any professional working with younger children (around 4-12 years) who are on the Autism Spectrum, in developing their social skills through using theory of mind.” (ACAMH, 26 March2015)

Review
‘Without being aware of it we all continuously attribute mental states, such as desires and beliefs, to other people, and in this way we predict what they are going to do next. This is what children and adults with autism cannot do spontaneously. But, years of painstaking research has shown that they can be taught to do it. Clearly, this does not turn them into spontaneous mentalisers, but it does benefit their understanding of the otherwise unpredictable social world.

‘In their scholarly introduction to the book the authors review an impressive number of training studies using different types of teaching aids. Informed by scientific evidence, and without any hype, they offer the best of these in The Workbook. It contains teaching aids in picture and story form that are bound to inspire teachers. The general approach is to build up a sequence of skills in line with the sequence observed in typical development; from joint attention, to pretend play, to perspective taking, to understanding emotions, desire and more complex informational mental states such as knowledge and ignorance, and finally complex second order beliefs (eg: “he thinks that she believes he is telling the truth”). It is with these complex mental states that the new workbook has expanded most over the previous one.

‘This manual provides an invaluable source of ideas and techniques on how to teach children and adults with autism about mental states, and it never loses sight of the need to link this teaching to their social skills in everyday life.’
—Professor Uta Frith, University College London, UK

“The Workbook joins the authors’ seminal Teaching Children with Autism to Mind-Read: A Practical Guide for Teachers and Parents in providing research-based protocols for developing and advancing mentalizing skills and social cognition in children with autism spectrum conditions. It extends the program provided in the book, offering scientifically validated, though clear and simple-to-use, principles for the understanding of informational states, as well as illuminating stories, examples and activities, promoting the generalization of the principles acquired.

“The Workbook is highly recommended for parents, teachers, and clinicians wishing to base their work on rigorous scientific knowledge of how the understanding of others’ minds works, and how this can be improved in children on the autistic spectrum.”
—Dr Ofer Golan, Head of the Child Clinical Program, Bar-Ilan University, Israel

This is a much-awaited revision of Howlin, Baron-Cohen, and Hadwin's 1999 volume Teaching Children with Autism to Mind-Read that includes expanded lessons and concepts to teach high-functioning children with autism about mental states. The approach is importantly developmental – based on prior research and progressive sequences of concepts and stages of instruction. It includes multiple foci, including teaching about differences in perspectives, about beliefs, about knowing, about emotions, and more. No one thinks that teaching mental-state understandings will address all the social-cognitive challenges faced by children with autism, but understanding the mental states of self and other is an acknowledged and crucial challenge for these children (and adults) and one that this workbook carefully and effectively addresses. It is a lively and practical book that will be a tremendous resource for parents as well as educators.
—Henry Wellman, Harold W. Stevenson Collegiate Professor of Psychology, University of Michigan

Thedifficulties faced by children with autism in understanding the workings of other mindsare instinctive and pervade all aspects of social development. This practical workbook applies research that shows that such a developmental approach may be helpful in laying the foundations for reciprocal social understanding. It will be useful to parents and teachers and other professionals working with children with autism.
—Richard Mills, Research Director, Research Autism, UK

    About the Author

Jane W. Ball graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, and subsequently received a BS from the Johns Hopkins University. She began her nursing career working in the pediatric surgical inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient clinic of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center, first as a staff nurse and then as a pediatric nurse practitioner. After recognizing a need to focus on the health of children she returned to school and obtained both a master of public health and a doctor of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a focus on maternal and child health. After graduation Dr. Ball became the chief of child health services for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health. In this capacity she oversaw the state-funded well-child clinics and explored ways to improve education for the state’s community health nurses. After relocating to Texas, she joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing to teach community pediatrics to registered nurses returning to school for a BSN. During this time she became involved in writing her first textbook, Mosby’s Guide to Physical Examination, which is currently in its eighth edition. After relocating to the Washington, DC, area, she worked at Children’s National Medical Center on a number of federally funded projects. The first project in 1986, teaching instructors of emergency medical technicians from all states about the special care children need during an emergency revealed the shortcomings of the emergency medical services system for children. This exposure was a career-changing event. A textbook entitled Pediatric Emergencies, A Manual for Prehospital Providers was subsequently developed. A second project led to the development of a pediatric emergency education program for nurses in emergency departments to promote improved care for children. Both of these programs served as a foundation for other pediatric emergency education developed and sponsored by national organizations. For 15 years Dr. Ball managed the federally funded Emergency Medical Services for Children’s National Resource Center. As executive director, she provided and directed the provision of consultation and resource development for state health agencies, health professionals, families, and advocates about successful methods to improve the health care system so that children get optimal emergency care in all health care settings. After leaving that position, she continues to be engaged in many projects with a focus on the emergency care system. She is a consultant to the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, supporting state trauma system development. She recently completed a federally funded project to study whether the implementation of a statewide pediatric emergency department recognition program improved pediatric emergency care. In 2010, Dr. Ball received the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Johns Hopkins University.

Ruth C. McGillis Bindler received her BSN from Cornell University—New York Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in oncology nursing at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and then a public health nurse in Dane County, Wisconsin. Thus began her commitment to work with children as she visited children and their families at home, and served as a school nurse. Due to this interest in child health care needs, she earned her MS in child development from the University of Wisconsin. A move to Washington State was accompanied by a new job as a faculty member at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education in Spokane. Dr. Bindler was fortunate to be involved for over 38 years in the growth of this nursing education consortium, which is a combination of public and private universities and colleges and is now the Washington State University (WSU) College of Nursing. Ruth obtained a PhD in human nutrition at WSU. She taught theory and clinical courses in child health nursing, cultural diversity and health, graduate research, pharmacology, and assessment, as well as serving as lead faculty for child health nursing. She was the first Director of the PhD in Nursing program at WSU and most recently served as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, which include Master of Nursing, Post-Masters certificates, PhD and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. She recently retired and serves the college and profession as a professor emeritus, continuing work with graduate students and research. Her first professional book, Pediatric Medications, was published in 1981, and she has continued to publish articles and books in the areas of pediatric medications and pediatric health. Research foci have been childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiometabolic risk factors in children. Ethnic diversity and interprofessional collaboration have been additional themes in her work. Dr. Bindler believes that her role as a faculty member and administrator enabled her to learn continually, foster the development of students in nursing, lead and mentor junior faculty into the teaching role, and participate fully in the profession of nursing. In addition to teaching, research, publication, and leadership, she enhances her life by professional and community service, and by activities with her family.

Kay J. Cowen received her BSN from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and began her career as a staff nurse on the pediatric unit of North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She developed a special interest in the psychosocial needs of hospitalized children and preparing them for hospitalization. This led to the focus of her master’s thesis at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) where she received a master of science in nursing education degree with a focus in maternal child nursing.

Mrs. Cowen began her teaching career in 1984 at UNCG where she continues today as clinical professor in the Parent Child Department. Her primary responsibilities include coordinating the pediatric nursing course, teaching classroom content, and supervising a clinical group of students. Mrs. Cowen shared her passion for the psychosocial care of children and the needs of their families through her first experience as an author in the chapter “Hospital Care for Children” in Jackson & Saunders’ Child Health Nursing: A Comprehensive Approach to the Care of Children and Their Families published in 1993.

In the classroom, Mrs. Cowen realized that students learn through a variety of teaching strategies and became especially interested in the strategy of gaming. She led a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of gaming in the classroom and subsequently continues to incorporate gaming in her teaching. In the clinical setting, Mrs. Cowen teaches her students the skills needed to care for patients and the importance of family-centered care, focusing on not only the physical needs of the child but also the psychosocial needs of the child and family. During her teaching career, Mrs. Cowen has continued to work part time as a staff nurse: first on the pediatric unit of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro and then at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. In 2006 she became the part-time pediatric nurse educator in Brenner’s Family Resource Center. Through this role she is able to extend her love of teaching to children and families.

Through her role as an author, Mrs. Cowen is able to extend her dedication to pediatric nursing and nursing education.

A Very Easy Death, by Simone de Beauvoir

When her mother was in the hospital with terminal cancer, Simone had time to reminisce about her mother's early life, as Simone and her sister, Poupette, prepared to face the decision of whether to prolong a life when it was full of suffering. Like most people they believed it would be better to die than to continue to suffer, but their mother had a very different view of the matter. Franoise de Beauvoir had finally found happiness in her life, and she truly believed she could find happiness in her own suffering.

Considered by many to be the master work by Simone de Beauvoir, A Very Easy Death focuses on death and the other limitations in one's life and with what attitude one approaches them. Through her mother's beauty, her smile, and her pride in her life and in herself, Simone learned that to be human and to have individual choice are the most important aspects of existence.

    Death Comes Not So Easily
    By Nanci
This is a book I would put on a must read list. Death has been spirited away behind closed doors, and banished from our thoughts until it forces its way through, as it always will. This is a must read for anyone working in "Health Care" or with the elderly, also anyone counseling families and the dying. I would hope to find it on a required reading list for medical schools as well. de Beauvoir gives an honest, raw account of her thoughts and fears as her Mother dies; it is a bit reassuring to see that not all of those thoughts are pure and idyllic. She gives any ethics committee a firm reference point in the consideration of assisted death vs. assisted living. Read this book, it will enhance your life.

    Well written but ...
    By M. J. Smith
I have recently read Duras' No More and Ernaux's I Remain in Darkness (both of which I recommend) so when I saw A Very Easy Death I picked it up to read as another take on death. I was disappointed.
Beauvoir writes well - it is sheer pleasure to read some of the descriptive passages where she selects just the right details to set the physical and emotional scenes. Her self-revelation of her surprise at her emotions is often poignent.
However, two aspects of the book disturb me. First, Beauvoir writes as if she knew well what her mother was thinking and assumes that the deception of her Mother worked. Given the number of death images in the mother's dreams and given her gradual detachment from the external world, I suspect that her mother knew she was dying but did not wish to confront her daughters regarding the deception. Beauvoir writes touchingly of the long standing riff between she and her mother - their lack of mutual understanding - then asks me to trust her interpretation of her mother's frame of mind in her last days. A bit more of a stretch than I care to grant.
The second aspect of the book that disturbs me is the ease with which Beauvoir slots particular events into general intellectual categories. For example, when the doctor's exhibit a bad bedside manner, she writes "I bristled when the privileged classes spoke ...".
The book is an interesting reflection on the perceptions and self-examination of the author. It could well be comforting to others going through similar situations. Read it if it appeals, but don't put on any must read list.

An eye-opening experience of losing a mother to cancer
    By kgaudett@u.washington.edu
DeBeauvoir writes so that each word holds as much importance as each drip of life-sustaining solution pulsing into her mother's withering limbs. A Very Easy Death leads readers through the changing labyrinth of emotions surrounding the graphically-described death of the author's mother while undergoing care in Paris. On eloquent display is DeBeauvoir's heartache, anger, and confusion regarding the painful treatment of her cancer-ridden mother by two unrelenting doctors. Readers become DeBeauvoir's confidants, as through her torment she reveals her questioning of religion and the human body,as well as society and class issues. An expressive tale that challenges and explores cultural perspectives on death and dying.

    About the Author
A Hoosier born and raised, Monette lives in the heartland near Indianpolis, Indiana. After obtaining her law degree, she worked in a small general practice, attempting in her own way to right wrongs and fight the good fight. Little did she realize that all those clients, opposing counsel and the problems she handled would jump start the need to write fiction. But after twenty years in law, she did just that -- started writing. First, romantic suspense, then adding paranormal romance and science fiction romance, then adding a sexier side (as Rae Morgan). She still practices law - - but writing is her passion. Monette is married to her college sweetheart and has one son and a cat. The cat is the boss. Website: http://monettemichaels.com

As usual a great suspense and romance in this latest SSI book
    By Cindy O
I am a SSI junkie. I’ve loved this series from the start. What are you going to get in a SSI book – plenty of action, very bad guys who do despicable things but you know will get their punishment, and a sexy alpha male that knows how to pleasure a woman.

The lovable but deadly Ukrainian Vanko Petriv finally gets his book. Vanko may be tough on the outside but he really wants a woman of his own to love. When he’s assigned to go get a woman who can finally identify the DOD traitor that has been trying to kill them since the first book he knows right away this is his woman.

Elana is from Russia but placed in the United States with a new identity after a sick Russian Mafia head killed her parents and sexually assaulted her due to his fascination with her. She works at a college library when one night she accidentally overhears a man put a hit out on Keely Walsh and the SSI Team. Soon after she has a hit out on her on head and finally manages to get to Vanko where the two of them are not only on the run from the mercenaries that the DOD traitor hired to kill them but also from the Russian who now knows she is alive and will do anything to get her back.

I have to say Ren used to be my favorite but Vanko has now taken top spot. You are never bored in a SSI book and this one was no exception. I did think we were finally going to get a conclusion on the ongoing traitor arc but the author likes throwing in those surprises. Thank you Monette for another great book in the series and I look forward to the next.

"A chance overheard meeting will bring a librarian and a security contractor together and lead to a lasting love."
    By Amazon Customer
Elana Fabrizzio is a Washington DC college librarian who is working the late night shift. The library is all but empty because of the big basketball game, so when Elana goes to gather the books that need to be put back she isn’t expecting to see many people. That is exactly what she finds until she stumbles across a meeting and hears a murder for hire meeting. Now all Elana can think of is to get out of there, alert the police and warn the subject of the murder plot – a woman she heard speak once.

Vanko Petriv is an agent of SSI (Security Specialists International) currently visiting with family in New York when he receives a call to go and find Elana and keep her safe. She is the best chance they have at finding the government spy that has not only threatened SSI’s employees but has also tried to kill the owner’s wife. Vanko is instantly on the job and learns that he might be too late when Elana finds that she has bad guys after her already.

Vanko saves Elana and gets her out of Washington DC but Mother Nature is against them and the weather is horrible. Getting Elana back to SSI headquarters is out for now but Vanko believes he has a solution to keep her safe until the weather is better. However, it seems that the news stories on Elana have alerted an enemy from Elana’s past. Elana’s past is not what it seems and suddenly Vanko and Elana have to keep her safe from more than the government spy. While all this is going on, an instant passion has sprung up between Elana and Vanko that both want the chance explore and they can only do so if they can defeat both threats to Elana.

A chance overheard meeting will bring a librarian and a security contractor together and lead to a lasting love. Elana and Vanko discover that fighting for the chance to love is everything in Weather the Storm. I have wanted Vanko to have his happy ever after since I met him in the very first book in the SSI series. I truly thought that Elana was the perfect match for Vanko and loved just how much they had in common as her story slowly unrolled. I enjoyed watching as they both used every trick they could to have the chance to have that future that was just beyond their reach. I really loved that Elana fought just as hard in her own way as Vanko did to defeat every threat that they faced. I have to say that I flipped the last page closed with a satisfied sigh. Weather the Storm is a thriller with equal amounts of suspense and passion drawn together in the way that only Ms. Monette can to keep you involved and believing that the characters are someone you could meet at any time.

    Weather the Storm
    By The Book Chick
A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

    My Thoughts:
Goodreads ate my original long review for this book so I'm having to recreate my thoughts and know that I am going to miss things *sigh*.

I am a fan of romantic suspense thrillers and Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series and J.D. Robb's (Nora Roberts) In Death series are among my favorites. I am definitely going to have to add Monette Michaels to my list of go-to authors when I want a sexy action packed thrill ride. Because let me just say, Weather The Storm was definitely that. High octane and absolutely steamy from beginning to end. All I'm saying is, sexy bathroom scene.

The story opens with Elana Cruz ne Fabrizzio, a librarian at Georgetown University, who is settling in for a quiet night at the library. Elana is accompanied by her co-worker Betsy and the security guard Harry. Harry's attention is completely zoned in on his television set as he watched a basketball game between their home school and Purdue. Laughing at his enthusiasm, the ladies decide to make their rounds on a hunt and seek mission to retrieve reference materials hidden by overzealous and industrious students who wanted to ensure their possession of the books. As Elana makes her rounds in the mostly empty library, images of her past flash through her mind. She is not who everyone thinks she is, her past and her story begin in Russia. But a heinous episode by a vile man changes her life forever. Elana's uncles ensure her safety by ensconcing her in the United States with a new identity and profession. Shaking off the dregs of her past, Elana continues her rounds and encounters one of her favorite graduate students Libby who is heavily pregnant, and due any day. She and Libby exchange pleasantries for a bit and Elana makes her way to a study area and then crawls underneath a table in one of the darkest corners of the room. See, Elana knows that students will hide books in the most unique of places and has often found books tapped to the bottoms of desks. As she is making her down-under investigation, she hears voicesdark and ominous voices. Two men are having a brusque conversation. They obviously don't like one another but the details of their conversation of their conversation are clear: murder, espionage, and treason. Elana assumes a still-life position so that the men don't discover her presence. She is almost free and clear. The men disperse but righteous indignation boils in Elana's gut. She will never again allow an innocent to be hurt by a vicious man. She determines to follow, who she labels, the "boss." As the "boss" is leaving his path intersects with Libby's and Elana hears her sharp cry of pain. Propelled into action, Elana places herself in the direct path of the "boss."

Doing the right thing changes the course of Elana's future. She is no longer an unassuming librarian. She is a witness on the run. The "boss" wants her and he sets mercenaries out to eliminate her permanently. Fortunately for Elana, the good guys, in the form of SSI are aware of the "boss" as well. They know that there is a traitor; they just don't know who he is. For the sake of national security, they need Elana to visually identify him. SSI dispatches Vanko Petriv to retrieve Elana and return her safely to their sanctuary in Idaho. Vanko is visiting his sister and her family when he gets the call about Elana. He is immediately intrigued by her "good Russian name" and so is his sister, Tanya. Tanya has a seemingly preternatural ability to glean bits and pieces of the future. She tells Vanko that Elana is HIS. Propelled by her prophecy, Vanko leaves his family and heads directly to Elana.

Once they meet. . .the action really begins!

I know, you probably hate me for not giving more details but trust me you will thank me after you read Weather The Storm. This story was full of twists and turns. I love red herrings and this book had them. Just when I thought I had something figured out, my mouth was left hanging open with a pleasant shock. Michaels definitely spun a tale that keeps the read on the edge of their seats. Up was down, down was up and good and bad blended into an undistinguishable gray.

I love how Vanko and Elana interacted with one another. Sure, he was this big, bad commando but he was sweet, gentle, and solicitous of Elana. He never used his strength against Elana and he made it his mission to gain her trust, which he totally did! And ElanaI adored her character! She had a hard knock life. Brutal. But, her strength and tenacity girded her with a core of steel. She was solid under pressure and bended but did not break. I was totally impressed by her actions at the end of the story. She would definitely ensured that she would never again be a victim. Buh bye Ziv. I also appreciated the integration of the other SSI characters in the story. They were peripheral and important but you did not need to read the other stories in the series to understand what was happening in Weather The Storm.

Michaels is a masterful author and I highly recommend this book and this entire SSI series to anyone who is looking for a romantic thriller with a sexy Ukranian commando. BTW, the Russian endearments...le sigh. Pick up this story today. You will not be disappointed!
