I have read other books on hypnosis and practiced it for a few years. This is a slow yawn with a wannbe erotic method. I downloaded for a break but just couldn't appreciate it like some have.

but with the crappy conversion that was done

The issue is not with the book itself, but with the crappy conversion that was done, from print to ebook. This book is clearly suppose to come with an audio CD and the author routinely makes references to italicized words/phases but nothing is italicized.
The book itself is a fun read and is a nice beginner's book for hypnosis in general or sexual hypnosis specifically. It is by no means the end of the journey into this erotic art.

Definitely a "gateway" read...

Someone else may rate this lower or higher, depending on their familiarity with hypnosis/erotic hypnosis, but we found it an very interesting place to start. It will definitely get the inquisitive mind digging. One thing we enjoyed, and this may seem simple, there is an audio download by the same name (included in the purchase I believe...I may have purchased it separately though) which is a sort of open-ended induction, very useful for a couple who's just getting into this. My wife even says she prefers Mrs. Friesen's voice to most of the hypnotists in this genre, male and female alike.

As a cynic, it doesn't get the 5th star for lack of the scientific evidence my left-brained Self typically requires...but then again, that's just where I sit.

Overall...if you're new to this sort of thing, if you're into bedroom experimentation, if you have a willing and open partner...its worth the cash.

Tedious, depressing stories, unenlightening

I forced myself to read to the end, hoping for some redeeming message that would explain why this book is worthy of a Nobel,prize; the take-home message: life in a poor town is, not surprisingly, depressing. I did not like any character in the book, and did not find any of them sympathetic, and it ended abruptly, with a very weak link between Rose and the recently introduced character, Ralph, who apparently had a significant impact on Rose's life. I do not recommend this book.

One of the best books of the last quarter century

Alice Munro's "The Beggar Maid" is probably the best collection of short stories I've evr read, though their interconnected nature makes it seem like you're reading a novel. In either case, it shows the trademark of all good literature: it touches you, deeply.
Alice Munro may very well be the best short story writer alive today. Comparisons to Chekhov are not far-fetched. The title story, "Royal Beatings," and several others are masterpieces of the form. Munro's writing shows a wisdom and a psychological depth possessed only by the most accomplished artists and students of human nature. Not to mention her prose: spell-binding (I would read the Yellow Pages front to back if Ms. Munro penned them).

Masterful short story collection

I don't even LIKE short stories. I always turn the last page over, and go, `Huh? Where's the rest of it?' But I make an exception for some authors, and Alice Munro is one of them. The Beggar Maid is a collection of stories that verges on some vague new definition of The Novel. It's full of unexpected time leaps in time and even more unexpected transformations of the constant characters. It's all a bit mysterious, confusing, suggestive - and altogether exhilarating. Munro weaves, picks apart, reweaves, then interweaves these stories about two women over a span of 40 years. They are prudish and suspicious Flo, and Rose, her stepdaughter, an awkward pathetic creature who somehow pulls herself out of her stultifying home town and embarks on her own life out in the big bad world.
