"Augustine's main work against the 'Academic’ skeptics is Contra Academicos, written shortly after his conversion to Christianity. Blake D. Dutton judiciously supplements his dissection of this work with a consideration of other pertinent texts. As Dutton points out, it was important to Augustine to refute this kind of skepticism because the Academics claimed that the happy life could be achieved only by one’s suspending judgment on all matters, a claim that is implausible on its face and inimical to Christian faith. Dutton nicely provides the historical and philosophical background against which Augustine’s campaign is carried out. Augustine is Dutton’s protagonist, but Dutton is perceptive enough to see that his hero has not succeeded in banishing the foe entirely from the field and honest enough to explain where the vulnerabilities lie. One of the most salient virtues of Augustine and Academic Skepticism is fairness to both sides, a fairness that manifests itself in the care with which Dutton presents and appraises arguments, alternative readings, and intelligent conjectures about what might have been said but wasn’t. Challenges The Traditional

I strongly disagree with the previous reviewer. Brandon Scott provides a challenging reading of the parables by proposing ways of hearing them that are set apart from the later Christian interpretations of the parables that were edited into the Gospels of the New Testament. Scott's theory, which he successfully defends, is that Jesus' parables were much more revolutionary, much more critical of the social/political/religious culture of Jesus' lifetime than those versions that were more spiritualized, made more palatable for the widespread proclimation of the Christian faith in the late 1st Century. Do I agree with every theory of every parable in Scott's book? No. However, his reading is one of the most insightful and historically valid interpretations of the parables that I have read. Along with John D. Crossan's book, "In Parables," Scott's book brings Jesus' message to new light. As a United Methodist pastor, who preaches Jesus' parables with passion, Scott's challenging interpretation helps me broaden my understanding of Jesus' message.

Jesus' parables are perhaps his most endearing words, but they are also challenging. Over the centuries there have been vast and varied interpretations of these seemingly simple stories. All a reader needs to do is examine what the great writers of Christianity, beginning with the Patristics, had to say about the parables to see how these stories have been viewed and used over the centuries. It's easy to understand why the parables can have so many different interpretations. It demonstrates that Jesus' words are still both living and challenging.

Bernard Brandon Scott's HEAR THEN THE PARABLE has become a standard commentary on the parables and is used frequently in scripture study classes on the college and graduate level. The work is copious. He gives a thorough background to the literary form known as the parable. He also discusses a number of the parables in depth, examining how they are sued by the different evangelists, looking at them from a literary point of view, and trying to place them in the context of Jesus' ministry. Some of his interpretations can be somewhat far fetched and some readers may even consider them irreverent (as a few of the other Amazon reviewers have noted). Even if a reader does not agree with all of his conclusions, or may consider him somewhat flip, he can't be faulted for his research. He presents in a succinct manner all that is available which is itself a service.

As far as parables are concerned, Scott's book is not the first one I look to for ideas for homilies or Bible study lessons. Pheme Perkins' now out of print HEARING THE PARABLES OF JESUS is my first choice. I suppose it's ironic that I first read Scott's book when I took a course with Dr. Perkins at Boston College. Still, I do refer to it somewhat often when I need an idea clarified. While it may not be the most helpful pastoral commentary, it is great for study. He presents a variety of scholarship in each of his entries and has a large bibliography which can lead a reader to a variety of sources.

I just read this book and thought it was great. The author's insights into the parables of Jesus made them much more credible to me. Better grounding in history makes my faith stronger.

Michael E. Milakovich is a professor of Political Science at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Dr. Milakovich is a widely published author of journal articles and textbooks on a variety of subjects in digital governance, political science, and public administration.

George J. Gordon is professor emeritus of Political Science at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, and author of numerous conference papers and journal articles on federalism and intergovernmental relations. Active in political and civic affairs, Dr. Gordon is a past presidential elector (1992), a member of the McLean County (Ill.) Board, and a section head for the annual Conference of the Midwest Political Science Association.

I can not lie this is an amazing book. While it started out I needed this book for an MBA class, I still reference it as I am a county commissioner. It is an easy read, with a great index and glossary. Everything is well described within the pages. I highly recommend this for anyone working in the public sector or want to understand how the public sector works.

The material was dry but it is for a college course so that isn't surprising.
I still would recommend it over the hard copy. It was easy to look up info with the search option. You can bookmark sections for later on. It makes open book tests a lot easier to be honest.
Material wise it was sufficient. It did the job.

A must if you're serious about prayer!

Every single person who calls themselves a Christian should read this book. This book is NOT A COMFORTABLE READ!!! It deals with the seriousness of the need for seeking God, following His will not ours, listening to and for the Holy Spirit and the need to confess sins and change ones life with God's help, in order to pray according to how God would have us pray with the guidance of His Holy Spirit. This book is very heavy and not comfortable to read since things that need to be dealt with, namely sin and self will, will start to be exposed thus starting the struggle of the flesh. You cannot read this book and do as it says and just go about your merry life plan. If you want to do and pray with God then you will have to become a clean vessel and moldable, both via His help. This book will convict like crazy and show you the need to sacrifice your life for the needs of others by prayer,fasting and changing what the Holy Spirit shows you to change.

This book is also extremely encouraging since Mr. Howells did a lot of praying, along with others, during WWII and they saw the fruit of their prayers as they affected the outcome of the war. It illustrated that prayer is powerful and that "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." James 5:16. I do believe with the political and global climate of today that this book should be required reading for all Christian believers and especially here in America where the belief that voting, while it is important, will save us. Voting the "right man" into the White House or in local places of government will not save us but God alone, meaning He will use them for His purposes so we should keep that first and foremost in our minds and prayer lives.

Devotion to prayer is NOT JUST FOR THE LITTLE OLD LADIES AT CHURCH! Devotion to prayer is not just for your mom or your dad or everyone else. It's for YOU to do and the Body of Christ to do, every day and for some at length. If Jesus,our Lord and Savior, prayed and fasted then you are not exempt and the excuse that you don't have time is not valid. Make time. Make time and use some of it to read this book. You will be blessed and your prayer life enriched.

Worth every penny!

One of the best Christian biographies I've read in a long time. This was a book that kept me turning the page till late at night until I found myself nodding off well after bedtime. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter to see how God was going to conform His servant and use him as an instrument of glory. The glory came through suffering and obedience. But, as the Apostle Paul said, "I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."
If we are to be used by God it is to be through suffering and obedience, even Christ experienced this and we are to follow in His steps (Hebrews 5:8). This book allows us to see how God graciously led His servant through suffering, obedience, usefulness, and ultimately intimate fellowship with the Lord. And, I haven't even mentioned any of the historical references and miracles that took place through this man's life.

True account of Rees Howells life and the part he played in the Kingdom of God

I found the book a remarkable account of one man's call from God and how he faithfully tried to follow His instructions. Everyone will take away their own insights from Rees Howells life time of dedication to being a tool for God and His kingdom. The accounts of how Rees and his family and friends prayed for things was thought provoking. The accounts of how WWII was prayed about gives me personally, more concrete assurance of the way prayers will change the direction of the evil doings that go along with war times. One of the things that amazed me overall was the lack of spiritual knowledge compared to this modern and yet God was and is so gentle and patient with us as we go about our daily and spiritual lives. Norman Grubb wrote the book and did a fine job. I have loaned the book out to others and their reaction has been positive.
