About the Author
John Olmsted III is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at California State University, Fullerton, from which he retired in 2003 after nearly 40 years of teaching and research in general and experimental physical chemistry. John was honored as the CSUF Outstanding Professor in 1997-98 and served as department chair from 1998 to 2001. In addition to 25 years at� CSUF, he taught for 12 years at the American University of Beirut. He had visiting teaching/research appointments at UCLA and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and did research at the Max-Planck-Institute f�r Biophysikalische Chemie (G�ttingen, Germany), the University of California at San Diego, and Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, NM.

John received his BS degree in chemistry from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) and his PhD in physical chemistry from UC Berkeley, where he also did postdoctoral work at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. He has more than 30 referred research publications and has also published regularly on chemical education topics in the Journal of Chemical Education.

In his retirement, besides continuing to write chemistry textbooks, John Keeps busy with his interests in gardening, photography, and the philosophy of chemistry. He and his wife Eileen enjoy traveling, dancing, and� visiting with their three married children and two grandchildren.

Greg Williams is an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon. He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry at UCLA and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at Princeton University. He has taught and conducted research at the University of Oregon, California State University, Fullerton, UCLA, and the University of California, Irvine. Outside the classroom, Greg's professional work is concentrated on developing graphics, digital animation, and interactive multimedia for teaching chemistry.

When he is not teaching or writing about chemistry, Greg can be found somewhere in the western United States, backpacking, climbing, skiing, fly fishing, or kayaking. He also sings low bass with the Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble. Greg lives in Eugene, Oregon, with his wife Trudy Cameron, a Professor of Economics at the University of Oregon, and their daughters, Casey and Perry. He absolutely insists on enjoying life.

It may help to use additional resources with the book

The pros about this book:
1. I really enjoyed the sample problems in the book. It helped prepare me for the additional problems in the book.
2. For the most part, I understood everything. Reading it was not too difficult.
The cons about this book:
1. Some answers were incorrect. I had to speak with the instructor to get a couple of problems cleared.
2. The worst is that there is a solution manual available for only the Odd problems. I'd prefer a solution manual with both even and odd problems so that I can compare my work with and not hassle the professor's as much as i do to make sure i'm understanding the material.

Under valued

Chemistry - The molecular Science. Written in the Preface - "Success in general chemistry requires a blend of ingredients. It requires a clearly presented body of information and we hope you find it in this textbook". My comments, as an older student of chemistry and in my case, electrochemistry, this book not only gives one the information but also background to that information. It 'teaches' the reader. It has the ability with just a few well chosen words and 1612 illustrations to give the reader many 'ah ha' moments that puts many pieces of half information together. Knowing what I now know about this book I see a value of hundreds of dollars and not the pittance I paid. Thanks Amazon, I am at last on my way. I recommend this book to any serious chemistry student.

Why don't they use books by Wiley in high schools?

That is the gold question because Wiley Publishers put out some amazing books. A highly organized index, comprehensive tables for electron affinity, ionization energies, thermodynamic functions, equilibrium constants and standard redox potentions are all here for the intermediate/advanced reader while all the fundamentals from bonding to composition are here. The book focuses heavily on electron relationsips in bonding and the effects of intermolecular forces. Large colorful charts and diagrams are shown on every page. There are multiple examples throughout every chapter with an adbundance of questions at the end. The only complaint is an incomplete periodic table as it only shows molar mass, valence configuration, the atomic number, and the elemental symbol. Great book with good organization. 5 Stars.

About the Author
Loek Halman, Ph.D. (1991) is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Tilburg University. He has published extensively on values and attitudes in contemporary society and the dynamics of value change. He is involved in the European Values Study. Inge Sieben, Ph.D. (2001) in Sociology, University of Nijmegen, is senior researcher at the Department of Sociology of Tilburg University. She published amongst others in the British Journal of Sociology, European Sociological Review, and Work, Employment and Society. Marga van Zundert, MSc., is a freelance science writer. She publishes in science magazines, journals, and educational series, and wrote science books for children.

Loek Halman, Inge Sieben, and Marga van Zundert (2012) display findings from the European Values Study surveys done in 28 countries that are members of the European Union and in 18 countries, also European, that are not members of the European Union. The most recent results date from 2008 (47 countries) and other results, when available, date from 1981 (15 countries), 1990 (27 countries), and 1999 (33 countries). questions, life at work using five questions, religion using four questions, politics using five questions, social issues using seven questions, and well-being using three questions. The average result for the country is displayed ... sometimes as a percentage of those assenting to the statement, sometimes as the mean scale value from one to ten chosen by the respondent, sometimes as the percent of those choosing the optional answers offered by the surveyor, etc. The languages spoken in the countries surveyed - over thirty - are charted (page 7).

The Atlas is introduced by a statement by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council in October 2011. The European Council is composed of the heads of the governments belonging to the European Union. He wrote: "This Atlas of European Values provides a rich insight into the values and attitudes of the Europeans: more than 800 million people living on the `old' continent, both inside and outside the European Union's 27 member states. The atlas examines what Europeans value in family life, work, religion, politics, society, and well-being. With the underlying research spanning a generation in time, the Atlas also provides a picture of the important value transformations as well as of firm, incontestable beliefs. It is a treasure-trove of information on the wealth of opinions about Europe, and the forces that bind us in spite of our differences." The Atlas is presented in English. Only two of the 28 countries (Great Britain, Ireland) reported by the Atlas to be among the 47 countries surveyed have English as their principal languages. (I did not discover why the President of the European Council referred to 27 member states whereas the Atlas reports survey results from 28 member states.) The President's statement is the nearest declaration of the purpose for the report that I found. I have no insight into who the authors perceive to be the audience for their work except that that audience is expected to have a broad interest in Europe, probably identifying with Europe, to be moderately well educated ... probably as a college graduate, and, perhaps, to have leadership responsibilities in one capacity or another.

The Survey of European Values began in the late 1970s under initiatives by Ruud de Moor of Tilburg University and Jan Kerkhofs of Catholic University of Leuven, they accomplishing their first serious data collection in 15 European member states in 1981. Their "initiative was followed by non-European scientists and the project expanded into the World Values Survey (according to Halman, Luijkx, and van Zundert, 2005, p 11)." In 2005, they cite www.europeanvalues.nl and www.worldvaluessurvey.org as websites providing details about the questionnaires, survey methods, and the data themselves. The initiators of this work deserve high praise for its conception and the repeated carrying through of the work.

The 2012 Atlas has all but no list of references and no index. Its "acknowledgements" point to www.europeanvaluesstudy.eu as a source of information about the questionnaire, its translations, and the survey sampling. Not seeing the usual list of references and index, I asked a colleague about the scientific roots for this survey work and was given Inglehart's work on Modernization and postmodernization (1997) as a reference.

Halman, Sieben, and van Zundert have confined themselves to providing descriptive information about the average of the responses from individuals sampled in each country, showing the findings in map formats, and have omitted tracing the trends in attitudes and offering theories about what is happening and where the changes will lead in the future. These authors leave to the reader the task of deciding what the information and the trends mean ... a choice appealing to this reviewer as wiser than the choices made by Inglehart (1997). The informed citizen and the policymaker, however, not realizing the complexities underlying their expectations, may read these works by Halman and colleagues and grumble in frustration: "You are the experts. Tell me what this means."

I have reviewed Inglehart's work (1997), his data being derived from the World Values Surveys with roots stretching from about 1970 to about 1993, the 1993 data being the most recent survey data available to him at the time he was writing. Inglehart seeks to tell his readers what the data mean ... and I criticize him stoutly for his methods and conclusions although not for trying. I suspect, but cannot say with certainty, that Inglehart's data utilized the European Values Surveys of 1981 and 1990 and that some of my criticisms of Inglehart's work apply to the Halman reports of 2005 and 2012.

Thought-provoking study of ethics and politics

Thomas Pogge, the Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale University, has written a remarkable study. He exposes as myths the ideas that capitalist globalisation is gradually improving the lives of the world's poor through trade and aid, and that any remaining problems are local in origin, from backward cultures to bad rulers.

Chapter 1 introduces the global justice debate. Chapter 2 presents "my central claim: the dominant Western countries are designing and upholding global institutional arrangements, geared to their domestic economic elites, that foreseeably and avoidably produce massive deprivations in most of the much poorer regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America." Chapter 3 looks at how the United Nations and the World Bank present the situation of the world's poor. Chapter 4 examines how the Bank fixes the international poverty line at an absurdly low level. Chapter 5 looks at the huge growth of global inequality between and within nations.

Chapter 6 argues that global poverty is a higher moral priority than the abortion debate and that pro- and anti-abortion activists should work together for the better moral cause of ending poverty. Chapter 7 studies 9/11 and concludes that the US and British `war on terror' `copied the two great moral failings of the terrorists' - harming the innocent and caring little about their actions' morality. Chapter 8 criticises Kofi Annan's misuse of the Rwandan genocide to press for more `humanitarian interventions'. Pogge's Chapter 9 claims to relate our foreign policy failings to the flaws of our domestic institutions, but in fact it only presents an arid scheme for reforming what he rightly calls the EU's `undemocratic rule'.

He notes, "Many more people - some 360 million - have died from hunger and remediable diseases in peacetime in the 20 years since the end of the Cold War than perished from wars, civil wars, and government repression over the entire twentieth century. ... 1,020 million human beings are chronically undernourished, 884 million lack access to safe water, and 2,500 million lack access to basic sanitation; 2,000 million lack access to essential drugs, 924 million lack adequate shelter and 1,600 lack electricity; 774 million adults are illiterate; and 218 million children are child laborers. Roughly one third of all human deaths, 18 million annually, are due to poverty-related causes, easily preventable through better nutrition, safe drinking water, cheap rehydration packs, vaccines, antibiotics and other medicines."

The rich states, and the international financial institutions they run, promote the avoidable evils of massive poverty and oppression, selfishly pushing rules and policies that they know harm the poor, while hypocritically claiming to promote development goals. The capitalist states rob the poor while claiming to aid them. Poor countries illicitly transfer an estimated $1 trillion a year to rich people in the rich countries.

Pogge concludes, "By foreseeably producing these effects, the present global order is unjust insofar as there are feasible (i.e., practicable and reachable) institutional alternatives that would not produce such catastrophic human suffering."

This poverty could be ended! $296 billion a year, just 0.66 per cent of global GDP, would lift above the poverty line of all those who live below this line.

An amazing first volume

I heard this recommended months ago and I have to admit that I went into this book with a very skeptical attitude. The thought of essentially a Batman/Bruce Wayne story with sex and nudity didn't sound that appealing to me. But I was really surprised by what I actually got.

Although it would be very easy to just cut and replace all the names in Sex with who they're based off of in the Batman universe, they feel oddly unique. Casey has written the characters to be quite flawed and the world of Saturn City feels like something very rich. It is VERY graphic in its depiction of sex and nudity, but Casey has done it in a way that makes it feel oddly right in the world. Kowalski's art is wonderful and combined with great coloring Sex makes one of the best looking comics in a long time.

Think Batman for very, very mature readers!

One can't expect much from a graphic novel titled 'Sex', but one's expectations can also be blown out of the water. Think Batman if the creators were given no-holds barred freedom to show every facet of life in glorious detail and had the disposition to not only awe but shock the readers. The character development and plot are thick and amazing even to the discerning reader. Not for the faint of heart, but it never claimed to be. The volumes in the series are of decent length and you will find yourself immersed in the 'world' instantly. There are several parallels to the aformentioned Batman comics in the way the story is presented, but this series exists on a much more mature, higher plane of existence. Comes highly recommended!

Cheap and boring

What would happen if Bruce Wayne stopped being Batman - could he return to civilian life?

You wouldn't know it from the cheap, attention-grabbing title, but that's what Joe Casey and Piotr Kowalski's Sex is all about, and all it proves is what an unappealing storyline that is to pursue.

Simon Cooke is a billionaire playboy who runs a global company and is secretly the superhero vigilante, Armored Saint, protecting Saturn City from criminals like Prank Addict and Shadow Lynx. Annabelle LaGravenese is Shadow Lynx, a cat-like burglar with goggles who frequently tangles with Armored Saint. But when Simon's close friend Quinn asks him, on her death bed, to leave the vigilante nonsense behind and find happiness in a real life, Simon finds it hard adjusting to what most people term a normal life - sleeping during the night, working a job, having friends and a sexual partner.

While the premise sounds like Casey has some subversive ideas on the Dark Knight, after reading Book One, I can tell you that Casey doesn't have anything at all to say about Batman, Catwoman, etc. His Batman is somewhat resistant to sex because his many years spent living his alternative lifestyle and muses that his real identity might've been behind the mask than without it. Yawn. I'm sorry but that's a pathetic observation that's been made numerous times before. Casey's Catwoman has eye problems after wearing a mask that incorporated super night vision goggles. Oh, and Casey borrows Frank Miller's idea of Catwoman running a brothel. That's it?! His Joker character lives through the news clippings of the past and has the worst villain name ever - Prank Addict (though to be fair Armored Saint and Shadow Lynx are equally bad).

There's precious little of any real substance to justify the eight issue length of this first book. That's a longer-than-usual amount of issues for the first collected edition in a series and really there should be much more here than those lame character observations but there really isn't. Maybe Casey's spending the extra pages to world build? Well, there is a lot of sex depicted in this book (and it's all full frontal so this one isn't for kids) but Saturn City isn't a place that's any more saturated with sex than any city in our world and besides that it looks identical to every other Western city, so no, Casey's not world building, he's just wasting time.

And despite the brazen title and frequent, often gratuitous and pointless nudity, this isn't a shocking book. It doesn't have any brilliant ideas and it's characters aren't interesting. There's certainly no plot besides watching Simon sit through numerous business meetings. And this is why Batman works better than this - we read Batman because of his awesome adventures; we don't care about his life as Bruce Wayne, who has to sit in on business meetings every now and then. Take away the Batman aspect and you're left with a businessman going to meetings - in other words, boring comics!

Also I don't care about Simon or anyone in this book. He's a one-dimensional dweeb who lives in luxury and doesn't want to do it with any of the gorgeous high-end call girls throwing themselves at him because he's just not there yet mentally. Why would anyone care about this guy if that's the (non)dilemma? Can anyone relate?!

There's some side stuff featuring supporting characters where a old man gangster, creatively called Old Man, is doing something evil, and a dishwasher who's secretly a martial arts expert/hacker who's messing with a pair of homosexual gangsters, but nothing you could call a plot. I suppose with the inclusions of these crimes and Simon's dithering lack of direction as a civilian, it's pointing to the conclusion that he'll (sigh) once more don the Armored Saint uniform? Whatever. I'm not going to read Book Two to find out.

Piotr Kowalski's art is damned good throughout and his covers are stunning, showing an imagination lacking in Casey's script. The pull-back shots of Saturn City are really pretty and gives the story a strong sense of grounding and atmosphere, and the characters' facial expressions are very evocative that express moments of comedy or conflict perfectly on their own. Brad Simpson's colours are brightly colourful and exciting, making the pages pop in sharp contrast to dark Batman comics, particularly the Batman: Black and White comics.

In comparing this book to Batman I'm actually making it seem more interesting than it is - really it's the lamest facsimile of Batman coupled with the third act of Eyes Wide Shut, both minus the masks and the interest. Sex features a collection of cardboard cutouts apparently doing something in between scenes of sex acts. If that sounds appealing, as well as a sequence where "Catwoman" masturbates to the memory of being chased by "Batman" across the "Gotham City" skyline, then Sex is for you. Otherwise I'd say this is the one time it'd be safe to avoid Sex.

Tear You Apart is a modern fairytale that is an actual fairytale. The old stories and the new combine into this amazing story with characters I love. Sarah is such a wonderful writer and the way she describes the scenes you can't help but fall in. With the mix of different fairytales (even from different culture) and multiple repeating characters will keep you enraptured.

Tear You Apart is fabulous, glamorous and magical but it's also dark, gritty and dangerous. You have princesses and princes, fabulous parties, fairies roaming around, magic in plain sight, and fairytales coming to life. However you also have the dark-side like you would see in the original fairytales. There are these curses that come to life and some people don't survive their curses, they actually die.

Now characters from Kill Me Softly do make their rounds in this book and there is hints of what happened in the previous book in this one so I suggest reading Kill Me Softly first.

Viv is not what you would think Snow White would be like. She lives in modern times and she has know about the curse since she was little. Regina is plotting her death and would one day care out her plans and Henley may be forced to take her heart. So that means that Viv turned into a very cold/mean person. She isn't evil but she is harsh and at times you can see who she would have been and also how she still is, soft and caring at times.

Henley is a really nice guy and he really cares about Viv. Henley and Viv have such a strong bond however she treats him like crap because she believes in the curse, but he loves her so much that he sticks around. Since curses have the power to change people you can't help but wonder who side is he on.

Regina plays her role as the Evil Queen well, but she has this backstory. You find out that she wasn't always like this and I did find myself feeling a bit sorry for her.

I love when a story is beautiful and frightening. The descriptions of the scenes, parties and places are glamours and then you see the dark side of this tale and it just makes it better. Tear You Apart had me on the edge of my seat, so many different things was happening, trying to figure out if Viv would survive the murder attempts, trying to solve the mysteries and which fairytales where which.

I love this series so much and I really wish that it will continue on.

My Advice: Take a Bite--But This Apple is Sweet AND Sour

If you love fairy tales, read this. If you love writing that reads like dessert, read this.

If you can't get beyond characters being petty and immature most of the time, you might want to skip this.

I think it was worth it, because despite my frustrations with the characters, the scenes the author paints are gorgeous, and her reimagining of fairy tales is ingenious. But if that's the sort of thing that drives you nuttier than all of Snow White's pet squirrels, well, fair warning.

THE SWEET: Sarah Cross is an incredible world-builder. Ever since I read her first book set in the fairy-tale town of Beau Rivage, where residents are Cursed to play out certain roles from fairy tales, I was riveted by both the premise and her execution of it. She does an amazing job of capturing the magic and glamour of these stories, while not losing sight of the underlying darkness in many of the original versions of the fairy tales. Not everyone gets a happy ending. Not everything works out. But the curses don't always win either. Cross does a nice job of keeping you guessing.

I also love how she tied in characters from her short stories--Dusty and her prince have a cameo, the Twin Roses cafe is mentioned, and the Twelve Dancing Princesses certainly have a role (though I would have loved to have seen a bit of Mazurka--I missed her sass).

I really just can't overstate how much I love Beau Rivage, and all the incredibly well-thought-out fairy tale details at work here. Also, I loved how Sarah put a twist on the tale by mashing 3 fairy tales together. I won't say which, as it would spoil it, but I loved the way it was just layer upon layer of story.

THE SOUR: As far as the leading characters this time around, I can't say that I was quite as enamored. I was a bit skeptical going in, knowing that this story was going to be about Vivian and Henley, or Snow White and her Huntsman. In the first book, KILL ME SOFTLY, they had been background characters, notable primarily for their exceedingly screwed up relationship. They had initially come off as high-strung, destructive, and a bit irritating. However, it could never be said that their relationship wasn't *interesting*--I certainly was curious to know how they'd come to be the way they were, so I read this book to solve that mystery.

As characters, I didn't mind so much that Viv and Henley had started out as selfish people. Every character has to grow, and I was willing to give it time. What bothered me was that, despite all the plot that occurred, there wasn't much growth, and when it happened, it seemed to come out of nowhere. *Everyone* is *so* selfish. Henley says he loves Viv, and obviously he thinks he could never kill her, but he really considers the possibility that it might be fair to murder her, essentially for having the gall to choose someone else. I will give it to Henley that he is forever shoving that away and acts selflessly enough later on to (more than) make up for it. He is probably the least selfish of the bunch, or grows the fastest. But we spend so little time really getting to know him that he comes across as a bit of a cardboard cut-out.

*THE SPOILERS*

And Viv is almost unbearably self-centered, right up until nearly the end. Near the end of the book, she is still telling Henley that, "I don’t want you to be happy if it means you’re happy with someone else.” They are having a discussion wherein the options are that he ends up with someone else OR DIES. I mean, that is just an extremely selfish view to take on someone that you supposedly love. By the end, Viv does change her tune. She recognizes that she wants him to be happy, even as she hates the idea of him being happy without her, so...I'll give her that? But it's a very long, frustrating journey. She's claiming that she loves him for most of the book, but very rarely do her words and actions seem to reflect that, even after she's supposedly learned from her previous mistakes.

Jasper--he was selfish. Oh, so selfish. Of course, since he ends up as what I would call a minor villain, or at least an obstacle, disliking him hugely is not a problem. He comes across, initially, as a good guy--someone who Viv might not love yet, but who is willing to protect her. She rushes into things (understandably, really, as it's her best plan to stay alive), only to find that her Prince Charming's "charm" is a shiny veneer covering the truth that he really just cares about himself (and his sister, to be fair). He thinks that, as her prince who is fated to save Viv, he has earned her. Viv...is not all about that, to which I say, go girl! And I will admit that their relationship was far more toxic. At least Viv and Henley do care for each other deeply, which balances out some of their selfish tendencies. Both Jasper and Viv see each other as more of a means to an end. Given how many people Viv has hurt and used, I can't say that she seems *a lot* better. Really, Jasper and Viv are two sides of the same coin--they live most of their lives in fear, going with the Curses' flow, using people when it's convenient. Viv gains some guts once she gets to the Underworld, though. The worst things Jasper does--slapping Viv, and tricking her into thinking that Henley is dead--sway the balance so that Viv is a bit better in the end. But not by so much.

My main issues, ultimately, are that the heroes--while better than the King of the Underworld (a pretty low bar to set)--are not really better than the minor antagonist, and I don't feel like this is ever really called out or explored. I mean, Viv and Henley know that they treat each other badly, they apologize, but to me there wasn't really enough team work to make me excited about the pairing. We see their relationship at its dysfunctional finest, then they take some time away from each other, separately realize how much they love each other, and go through most of the plot separately. I never grew to love them as a couple, because we never spend much time with them, together, interacting in a not-fraught-with-anger-and-doom, healthy and positive way. I would say that Viv's coming to understand her stepmother progressed far better than the romance. Though I had my issues with it, I did appreciate how their relationship didn't wrap up nicely, and yet I felt like they'd come to a bit of understanding.

Mostly, this story seems to be about how people who love each other can also hate each other and try to kill each other, and it always seemed a very self-centered, gross kind of love to me, until the very end, which kind of felt rushed.

Additionally, the solving of the "riddle" really came out of nowhere for me. I feel like it would have been better if there had been a bit more hinting, so that in hindsight the reader could have that "aha!" moment. Although perhaps it was there, and I will notice it upon re-reading. I gobbled this story down like Hansel and Gretel on a gingerbread house, so I could have missed something. If anything, that speed is proof that, even as the characters aren't my favorite, I still love the writing and world-building.

I had one serious question--when Viv was trapped in the Underworld and didn't know what had happened to her friends, why didn't she just ask the 12 Dancing Princesses to find out for her? That seemed like an obvious solution, and it kind of bugged me that she never tried it.

The last thing that threw me off a bit were the references to the goings on of Book 1. They mention Felix, and worry about running into him, which seems like foreshadowing, but nothing ever comes of it. Perhaps it's a suggestion that we'll get another Beau Rivage story that will deal with that loose end--something certainly seems to be going on between Freddie and Layla, so I want to find out what's up with that!--but it kept me waiting on something that never came. Still, I guess it would have been weird if they didn't mention those events at all, so it's not a big detraction. This was meant to be Viv and Henley's story, not "Mira and Felix and Blue Part II", and I get that.

I love Beau Rivage, and I'd love to read more stories set there. Sarah Cross is a talented author, and even though I never fell in love with these protagonists like I want to, I hope she keeps writing in this world. I'm really dying to find out what happens to everyone else!

New all-time favorite. LOVED this. I first read "Kill Me Softly" and really liked it. So I decided to go ahead and get this one as well and like it even better. This is my new favorite book of all time. The plot work is incredible and I love that Sarah's characters are flawed and show that you don't have to be a perfect Mary Sue. I feel that I should also note I'm fairly critical of books being that I'm a young author myself, but I really and truly enjoyed this one. A must read for anyone who likes a bit of dark and flawed love or anyone who's enjoyed the other Beau Rivage tales. Seriously cannot say how much I love love LOOOVE this book.
