But this book should not be dismissed by those whose grasp of mathematics is not up to university standard. We all, at times, want to go deeper into some aspects of the subject and will find much of help and value in this book, even if we miss out the formulae and calculations. Needs revision

Covers an amazing variety of topics in observational astronomy. However, there are many typos and misprints and the order of the material seems strange. Our professor had us read the text haphazardly and provided a list of corrections to every chapter (small things throughout but noticeable nonetheless).

About the Author
Ingo Brenckmann runs the SAP HANA product management team at SAP AG in Walldorf, Germany. His team manages the release program, collects requirements from the various stakeholders, and helps prioritize different development tasks. His team of product managers supports the development teams in understanding how customers use the SAP HANA product and which features customers request for which purposes. Ingo is a frequent speaker at SAP conferences and has published articles on the topic of in-memory computing. From the beginning when Ingo joined SAP in 2007, he was close to the SAP in-memory products. Initially tasked with defining the SAP BI strategy and roadmap for SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse, including the SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator, Ingo ran the SAP BusinessObjects Explorer Accelerator project right after the acquisition of BusinessObjects. This product provided important insights for the successful SAP HANA program. Before joining SAP, Ingo worked for SAS Institute managing their technology platform in EMEA. Ingo was part of the team that designed and implemented the SAS OLAP Server, and later led the SAS DI Server, SAS Intelligent Storage, and SAS BI Server teams. Ingo studied computer science at the Technical University Darmstadt and wrote his master thesis for the Fraunhofer Society Mathias P�hling currently serves as a Specialized Sales Executive in the German field organization responsible for SAP HANA, the flagship product in D&T solutions portfolio. He supports strategic SAP customers in Germany moving towards SAP HANA, identifying the value that their business could gain, and how they could best define a suitable business case. Before Mathias joined the German sales organization, he was director of SAP’s Database & Technology Global Center of Excellence and responsible for sales enablement, pipeline build, and strategic customer support. He traveled all around the world to spread the knowledge of SAP HANA to customers and SAP professionals. His previous roles at SAP included global business development lead for SAP’s Explorer Accelerator, lead for BW Accelerator business development within the EMEA region, and various consulting and field support roles. Prior to joining SAP in 2005, Mathias worked for an IT outsourcer and SAP partner for four years. There he worked as a project manager for infrastructure projects and started his career as a SAP NetWeaver BW and Basis consultant. He holds a business degree from FHDW in Paderborn, Germany.

The SAP HANA Project Guide - Ingo Brenckmann and Mathias P�hling

I have been hearing a lot about SAP HANA and recently read that the NFL implemented HANA for the Fantasy Player Comparison tool and thought that I should learn a little more. The book goes in depth in terms of different implementation scenarios for HANA and how to create a business case for it. It was a good introduction to the technology.

Very disappointed eBook?

I am SP BW & BI Sr. Consultant for long long time yet I was very disappointed.
Once I have seeing Ingo name as an author on this book I clicked on it and purchased it right away as I was expecting this eBook will be something like Ingo other Business Objects books BUT I was very disappointed and dissatisfied of its contents and its language. There are Big different from Ingo Business Objects books and this one in term of everything because it is hard to comprehend and have a clear understanding of this book. I feel this does not have any value for HANA developers, HANA Data modular, HANA Admin because there is no hand on real experience examples.
I found many SAP document on SAP.com and SDN.com far more helpful and useful from this eBook. Even I found many Youtube.com video more helpful.

This is a remarkable, though not easy to digest, book. Pocock traces the development of modern republican political theory from its birth in Renaissance Florence to the end of the 18th century. This book incorporates both broad structural analysis of the the unfolding of this tradition and a detailed readings of the major and quite a few minor contributors to this tradition. Pocock starts out by demonstrating that the Christian-Medieval tradition of western Europe was not equipped with the conceptual apparatus to develop a theory of republican governance. Intellectuals in Renaissance Florence then had to look back to the Classical writings of Aristotle, the historian Polybius, and other classical writers, to develop a system of thought that could justify and guide the life of city-states in Italy. An underlying theme that Pocock stresses throughout the book is the struggle of intellectuals trying to develop systems of government that would produce fulfillment and stability but constantly confronted with the insecurity and unstable nature of the real world. Another recurrent theme is the pressure to articulate republican theory constantly being confronted with new circumstances. The development of republican theory, particularly by the brilliant Machiavelli and Guicciardini, being prompted by the specific historical circumstances faced by the Florentine state. Machiavelli is really the pivotal figure, developing political theory unmoored from the divine. After tracing the development of Florentine theory, Pocock moves onto the development of republican theory in the very different circumstances of 17th century Britain. Here, theory had to accomodate not the problems of a city-state but an entire nation and changed significantly under the stimulus of the English Civil War. Pocock presents James Harrington as the key modifier and transmitter of the Machiavellian tradition and who in particular emphasized the role of property as the basis for republican stability. Pocock then moves on to the challenges of the 18th century with the confrontation of republican theory with an emerging commercial and imperial society. The final chapter deals with what happened when the American revolutionaries attempted to construct to a new society based on classical republican ideas. The failure of these ideas prompted the development of a new version of republican theory. Pocock's close analysis of individual thinkers is sometimes tough reading but ultimately rewarding. The analyses of individual thinkers are punctuated by general analyses that are invariably insightful and sometimes brilliant. Among other things, this is a basic book for understanding the intellectual background of the American Revolution and many important topics in modern history.

Birth and growth of the modern republic-- in a nutshell

This is the best book that I have found to date that traces the development of the theory of the modern "res public" from Machiavelli and the Florentine city-state, to the Glorious revolution in 17th century England, to the foundation of the American republic.

The Machiavellian moment comes when the founders of a state realize that "virtue" can be dependent upon "contingency" at some point in the life of every government, and that the res public is the best method known to humans to manage both to the benefit of the citizens/body politic; "virtue" refers to the energy that the humanist writers of the period demanded of any honest citizen, in the vita activa; contingency is the weakness that enters into any human-created activity, given the incomplete nature of our knowledge.

This book is clearly written, and not difficult to digest if you come to it with some preliminary understanding, say, from quentin skinner's foundations of modern political thought.

I am finishing richard tuck's philosophy and government 1572-1651 which purports to analyze the development of the period's political thought up to Hobbes' publication of Leviathan in 1651, but it just isn't as rich or satisfying a work as this.

If you want to know why Machiavelli is so important, and understand his influence on the two greatest exemplars of republican thought since his time, this is without a doubt the book to read.

Pocock has written a profoundly exhaustive study of Florentine republican theory in the time of Machiavelli, the Republic, and the Medici restoration. He painstakingly makes his argument that the roots of Machiavelli's thought are to be found more in the metaphysical world view of Thomism than in the teleological taxonomy of Aristotle. He goes on to argue that the aim of Machiavelli, and contemporaries such as Guicciardini, is the attainment of stability in secular time through the proper extension of civic rights. He then goes on to claim that this aim is followed by the architects of Eighteenth Century Anglo-American republicanism. This strong intepretation of Anglo-American republicanism may understate the impact of, for example, the Miltonian view of individual capacity for moral and political reasoning. However, it certainly is expounded well enough here to hold its own in any debate. In passing, Pocock makes liberal use of untranslated Italian text. While this is useful to the Renaissance specialist, it would be helpful had he included translations for those of us who bring no Italian to the table.

About the Author
Kathy Schwalbe is a tenured Professor at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, primarily teaching courses in project management and problem solving for business. A professional working in the industry for ten years prior to entering academia in 1991, she is currently an active member of the Project Management Institute. Kathy earned her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota, her MBA at Northeastern University, and her B.S. in mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. She was named Educator of the Year in 2011 by the Association of IT Professionals. She is also the author of IT Project Management and Healthcare Project Management.

Best Book for Teaching Project Management

I must say this is one of the best books I have found to teach an introductory course in project management. It is flexible enough to use for both undergraduate and graduate courses, online or face-to-face. The fourth edition follows the latest PMBOK Guide, so it's a great resource for anyone planning to take the PMP exam. (The main difference is the addition of a tenth knowledge area - stakeholder management.) I really like the new Video Highlights feature, the 60-day trial of MindView software for creating mind maps and Gantt charts, and the new fixer upper case study and discounts for simulation software listed in Appendix C. This book goes beyond just preparing students for an exam by including lots of information on"how" to perform various project management tasks. I really like the way a concept is explained and then an example is provided on how to apply that concept. There are several exercises and team projects to help reinforce student learning. There are also many real-world references showing how organizations do things right and wrong in project management, plus xk cd cartoons and the new videos to lighten things up. Yes, there are dozens of introductory project management books on the market, but this one is comprehensive, easy-to-read, includes a great free Web site ([...]) with templates, interactive quizzes, Jeopardy-like games, etc., plus the price is right! Why should we make our students spend over $100 on a dry textbook when they can get this one and actually read it for less money? The appendices with guides to using Project 2010 and At Task (a leading web-based PM software) are excellent. The instructor materials are also outstanding, and the author is very responsive to instructorinputs. I highly recommend this book.

Great Textbook and How To Guide

I have used Kathy's textbooks at Lone Star College since 2008. We have had multiple communications about teaching project management over the years and she asked me to be a reviewer for this latest edition. The text is aligned with the Project Management Institute (PMI) PMBOK Guide, 5th Edition (based on the draft), to be released in December 2012. I was also a reviewer of the PMBOK Guide, 5th Edition draft.

In following the five Process Groups from Initiating through Closing, the text gives students and readers a logical progression through a case study project with examples, great illustrations, and thought-provoking assignments. Appendices provide introductions to MS Project 2010 and AtTask as well as a source of more detailed resources.

Kathy provides a website with supporting information for readers as well as a secure website for instructors.

I highly recommend the book as a college-level text as well as a source of project management training for organizations.

If there was a way to read it like the book

The information is all there, but there are no page numbers to follow class instructions (I had an assignment for class, the instructions was too follow pages and work thru the steps and take a snap shot of what was completed) It is hard to follow without page numbers.

If there was a way to read it like the book, showing a full page at a time.

If Hospitality Finance is your Major, then this book is a must have. Schmidgall is the authority on accounting for the Hotel Industry. This book is used in all of the top Hotel Management programs in the nation including Cornell, MSU, Florida International and etc.
The ratio analysis section is one of the best explainations I have seen to date. I use this book myself and love it.

Well structured and indexed and funny

The law can be a dry and dull read, but these authors have introduced just enough humour to make the effort worthwhile. The names of almost every party in the numerous cases sprinkled throughout the book are puns or double entendres, and some of them are a little tricky to figure out, making for a nice diversion when the subject might otherwise have been tedious.
