Bought this set for my 7 and 9 year old boys who love to read. Spy School was their book club book of the month and it was only $2 more to get the set of 3. They both LOVED all three books and want more in the series. Definitely recommend. Seems to appeal to a variety of ages and both boys and girls.

About the Author
Roy Yates received the B.S.E. degree in 1983 from Princeton and the S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in 1986 and 1990 from MIT, all in Electrical Engineering. Since 1990, he has been with the Wireless Information Networks Laboratory (WINLAB) and the ECE department at Rutgers University. Presently, he is an Associate Director of WINLAB and a Professor in the ECE Dept. He is a co-author (with David Goodman) of the text Probability and Stochastic Processes: A Friendly Introduction for Electrical and Computer Engineers published by John Wiley and Sons. He is a co-recipient (with Christopher Rose and Sennur Ulukus) of the 2003 IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications. His research interests include power control, interference suppression and spectrum regulation for wireless systems.

Dense Book: read thoroughly and it's actually friendly

This is a good book despite some of the highly negative reviews. The authors structure the content such that concepts are defined before being applied in a theorem. This book is also awesome because it has a lot of examples that are very similar to the homework problems. It doesn't take much abstraction to learn apply the processes demonstrated in the examples to solving your homework problems. Not only that, many example problems are further extended for use in latter examples, which is really helpful because you become very familiar with the example problem. When I was taking the course I knew where all the example problems in the book were because I referred to them more than I did to anything else. MATLAB examples are a nice touch since it teaches you how to apply your knowledge.

I would like to address the most common complaint:

"Hard to Understand/Not Friendly" - There aren't many complex topics introduced here. Most of the content is purely definition or theorem (proofs given). Perhaps people are mistaking their lack of grasp of the practical significance of topics mentioned with confusion due to poor explanation. This happens a lot when engineering is taught in an abstract way, which is how it's taught more often than not. Note: Authors also don't take many shortcuts in the math; the math should be possible to follow if you focus.

Excellent textbook, very easy to read for engineers

I'm an engineer and am starting to use stochastic process models for work. I'm not giving it a higher rating because there are no answers for practice problems at the end of each chapter in the book. I usually find these in most basic textbooks at the end of the book at least for selected problems. I tried to contact the publisher to ask for these and they said they couldn't provide them for self study but needed to show them "proof of purchase" of a "multi-copy order". It's hard to know if you're "getting it" when there's no way to check your work.

Difficultly vague on some concepts

This is my second course that deals with probability and so far I have found the book fairly challenging to understand. One thing that I should note is that the authors do not outright define that probability is generally the ratio of events to the sample space. Neither do they define cardinality or certain set algebra concepts. You get the basic fundamentals and are expected to work with it. While many in my class are struggling because they did not know these basic concepts, I have been flying through the initial problems due to a priori. In the later chapters when the author presents information that I do not already know, I am having a hard time trying to understand it. The most discouraging thing about the book is that the authors describe one process to solve a problem, but then use a completely different process in the solution manual. There should be in-depth explanations of when to use different methods, rather than to list the definitions and expect us to understand. I appreciate the work put into the book already, but more work needs to be done.

About the Author
Unni Wikan is a professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo. She is the author of numerous books, including Behind the Veil in Arabia; Managing Turbulent Hearts; and Tomorrow, God Willing-all published by the University of Chicago Press.

Unni Wikan, a social anthropologist who teaches at the University of Oslo, analyzes the effect her country's multi-cultural policies have had on women and daughters in immigrant communities.
Wikan weaves a compelling narrative in defending a highly controversial proposition: that the Norwegian state's multicultural policies, embraced by a progressive polity with the best of intentions, have actually led to a great deal of pain for the most vulnerable members of society, immigrant women and daughters. Although the Norwegian state's policies were intended to genuinely help newcomers, instead they unwittingly served to perpetuate and--Wikkan argues--strengthen separate cultural domains where traditional patriarchal rules apply. Sadly, these cultural rules were often more patriarchal in Norway than those existing in the countries of origin of the newcomers.
Wikan argues that with the best of intentions, the Norwegian state has empowered the strongest elements in the culture of newcomers: fathers, men and conservative religious leaders. The victims of these policies have been women, particularly daughters (and to a lesser extent, reformist men who call for progressive changes).
What is unusual about Wikan is her thorough knowledge of the literature in anthropology, feminism and the broader politics of immigration to Western European countries, as well as her personal experiences as a counselor to women and girls in distress. These are integrated in a smooth manner in her work.
This book is not only well-written but exceedingly well-researched. What is bound to be one of the most controversial books published so far on the subject is required reading for anyone interested in feminism, multiculturalism, and immigration in the Western European context.

This book is about how we meet our "new inhabitants". It tell us the story of what has happend to the people who came to our country (Norway), and the incompetence of the government. I think this is an important book, beacause it make us see that we have to open up our eyes and really think of the policy in questions of integration of new citizens.

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank's remarkable diary has since become a world classic—a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the "Secret Annex" of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

Atrapante de principio a fin. Lleno de ense�anzas y reflexiones tan actuales hoy como en el momento en que fueron escritas. Vale la pena dejarse llevar por el relato de esa adolescente, que no tiene nada que envidiarle a ning�n escritor profesional. Analiza con total naturalidad y frescura la complejidad de las relaciones dentro y fuera de su n�cleo familiar, al mismo tiempo que describe los cambios propios de la adolescencia, aunque matizados por la situaci�n que le toca vivir. Todo esto lo hace con una capacidad de introspecci�n y una autocr�tica admirables, lo que deja ver el verdadero genio detr�s de esa redacci�n. Simplemente imperdible.

About the Author
Swami Bhaskarananda, a monk of the Ramakrishna Order of India since 1958, studied for many years under the scholarly monks of the Order before he was sent to the United States to head the Vedanta Society of Western Washington in 1974. He is also the spiritual head of the Vedanta Societies in Hawaii and Vancouver, Canada. On invitation, the Swami has traveled extensively throughout the world giving talks on Hinduism and other spiritual topics. He is a founding member and past President of the Interfaith Council of Washington State, as well as an Interfaith Partner in the Church Council of Greater Seattle. The Swami is the author of the book "The Essentials of Hinduism" and is the founder and editor-in-chief of the quarterly journal "Global Vedanta."

Mind Over Matter

Meditation is a topic that has both cosmic relevance and cosmic resonance. In spite of its universal appeal, for most people total control of mind remains an elusive goal and daunting task. From time immemorial, there have been many attempts throughout the world to unlock the mysteries of the mind and to achieve total control over it through a variety of techniques. One of the most powerful of these techniques is meditation. In his book, Meditation, Mind and Patanjali��s Yoga, Swami Bhaskarananda provides a clear and concise exposition of the theory and practice of meditation to a global audience. The book is based primarily on the methods of mind control developed by the ancient Hindu sage Patanjali who had mastered the secrets of the human mind. Swami Bhaskarananda adds much more to his discussion of meditation beyond Patanjali��s famous aphorisms by drawing from the experiences of many spiritual leaders, sages, saints, and holy people such as Buddha, Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda. The author liberally uses anecdotes and familiar examples from contemporary life to illustrate and illuminate abstruse or esoteric points.

The book consists of a brief introduction and twenty short chapters. Chapter I sets forth the rationale for meditation. The focus of the next chapter is the teacher-student relationship in the practice of meditation. Chapter III outlines Patanjali��s eight-step discipline to yoga and Chapters IV-X elaborate on these steps. Obstacles to and hazards in meditation are discussed in Chapters XI and XII, respectively. The well-known, but widely misunderstood, concept of kundalini power is the subject of Chapter XIII. The Sankhya theory of creation is briefly examined in the next chapter. A lucid discussion of Samadhi in its multiple forms constitutes Chapter XV. The post-Samadhi state is explained in the next chapter. The three chapters that follow discuss Japa, spiritual progress, and stress relief, in that order. Concluding remarks are offered in Chapter XX.
This is not a book for those who are looking for miracle mind control or ��power�� yoga. Rather, it is intended for the true aspirants who are willing to diligently and earnestly practice the tried, tested, and time-honored techniques of meditation. The value of this highly instructive book is further enhanced by its many user-friendly features. These include the illustrations and photographs of sages and saints who have achieved Samadhi through meditation, a comprehensive glossary, and a detailed index. A list of recommended books for further reading is another appealing feature of this volume. In summary, the clear, concise, and non-technical discussion of the art and science of meditation, including many practical suggestions, makes this volume a must-have for any serious student and practitioner of meditation.

This book is a gem.

Swami Bhaskarananda covers a wide range of topics, from stress relief to samadhi. Any reader can extract practical guidance from this book due to the frank discussion of human psychology. Charming analogies occur frequently, such as this one:

"The average person's mind is like the rug in a living room. Over the years a lot of dust accumulates under the rug, but the dirt remains completely hidden. ... To improve the quality of the mind, ... elimination of these [hidden] defects is absolutely necessary." (pp 205-6)

The text is supplemented by photographs and useful line drawings such as "Correct posture for meditation."

Simple and Concise

I have read several commentaries on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and I find this book to be one of the best. It is a wonderful introduction to Meditation and Yoga, especially for westerners. Many people want to know more about meditation, and it is good to have such a clear and consise source of information. Meditation and Hinduism are vast subjects, and the reader is often duanted by the scope of available material on them. Swami Bhaskarananda helps the reader to sift through the vast jungle of Indian Philosophy and gets to the core of meditation practice. His analogies and anecdotes make it a pleasant read as well as being informative.

About the Author

Michel Rodrigue has been active in art design and comics for over 25 years. He began his career as a cartoonist, designing the official mascot for the 1980's French National rugby team. After working on a comic adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac and drawing for Tintin magazine, Rodrigue launched his own studio, "Cadero" in the mid 1990's, which he continues to run.
Antonello Dalena is an artist for Disney Italia. He has drawn the Donald Duck series Papernik for Topolino and PK3. He also works as a character designer on Artoonic
