Turnabout: An Attempt to Bring Closure

Turnabout, the sequel to Pursuit, is an attempt to tie up the loose ends of the television series Roswell, a story of science fiction set amidst the mind fields of teen angst. This is probably as futile as trying to end the story of Superman, though the authors do try to deliver. Unfortunately, by the last 75 pages of the book, I got the impression that they were losing interest and had not been paid enough for the time necessary to thoroughly research such an overly complex back story.
The overall writing gets a B+. It flows almost all of the time, but this is not the stuff of Pulitzer Prizes, nor is it intended to be. There is no eloquent prose, and there are a few typos.
Effort to please the fans and stick to the canon also gets a B. It's really a shame it's not an A+, because heroic efforts were obviously made to tie up all the loose ends in a Mobius strip of words. However, it is also obvious is that no hard core fans were invited to proof read for errors of content. In addition to reprinting the errors from the Prologue to Pursuit, there were several new mistakes in the back story, which leave the devoted and the uninitiated both asking, 'why bother?' These include: (1) the reappearance of a gun that was permanently melted on the television show in part of a brilliant bit of cinematography, (2) mention of Tess using a car bomb (instead of her alien powers as actually occurred on the show) to destroy a military base, and (3) agent John Stevens, who died in the first season of the show, is credited with disbanding the Special Unit in season 2 (it was really done by the shapeshifter Nasedo posing as agent Pierce).
It would have been better if more space had been devoted to explaining the mechanics and biology of the scifi elements (which were, by the way, quite cool) instead of doing a back story rewrite that was not quite accurate. Admittedly, the back story was nicely woven into the plot, rather than taking up chunks of pages, which the reader would likely skip. But Roswellians (as fans are self-monikered) are sticklers for detail and accuracy.
Still, what really bothers me about Turnabout is the horror factor (or 'yech' factor, as in the X-files). References to gore are not without precedence in either the tv show or the original Roswell High series. However, the emphasis here is at the expense of the relationship building which was the foundation of the fan base.
Die hard fans will want to read Turnabout, although, to paraphrase Nicholas from the Harvest episode, the series may be over, but surely Turnabout is not the end of the story.

Hi.

Any Fan of ROSWELL will love this book.

There is 4 books set after Season 3.

A New Beginning, Nightscape, Pursuit and Turnabout.

The 1st two books are by a different author but are equally as good.

The finale 2 books are what should be the ROSWELL MOVIE.

They tie up all the loose ends and have everything you could ever hope for in them.

They are a mixture of the action, comedy, drama. Basically like the writing of Season 1 (The white room) standard.

I really can't express how happy I was to read these books, they answer all the questions that were left.

E.g.

Their Parents back in Roswell

The Dupes

FBI

Growing Powers

Jessie

Langley

River Dog

Flashes (when they were on the desert w/ the alien symbols)

The Orbs (Explains more about when they went off on season 1 final and what they really mean/do).

So over all I am so happy with this book and recommend it to anyone!!!.

So thank you the Cast and Crew of ROSWELL and a special thank-you to Andy Mangles and Michael A Martin for continuing the story :-)

nice sequel

this book picks up where pursuit left off with liz and max's parents being kipnapped by the special unit and our 6 fugitives deciding to stop running and take the fight to the goverment for better or worse. along the way to this showdown, deputy valenti, amy deluca, agent duff, even brody davis gets involved in trying to stop the special unit once and for all. it does all come to a head and the writer closes a lot of issues the show did not get a chance to because it was cancelled prematurely. while this book did not have the excitement of the first book, it is a good one for all roswell fans and i just hope that there will be more roswell books from diffrent authors with diffrent ideals. the writers left too much in the air for just a couple of books to be printed. a must read for roswell fans.

About the Author

Paul T. P. Wong (Ed.)�received his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Toronto. He has held professorial positions at the University of Texas at Austin, York University, Trent University, and the University of Toronto, and has spent one year as a Visiting Scientist at the University of California at Los Angeles. He moved to Vancouver from Toronto in 1994 to assume the position of Director of Graduate Program in Counselling Psychology of Trinity Western University, where he currently holds the position of Research Director and Professor. He is the founding President of the International Network on Personal Meaning (www.meaning.ca), the International Society for Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy (www.existentialpsychology.org), and the Meaning-Centered Counselling Institute. With more than 120 published articles and book chapters reflecting his many research interests, he has focused on the roles of meaning, appraisal, and culture in the stress and coping process. The Stress Appraisal Measure developed by Edward Peacock and P. T.P. Wong has been widely used. His resource-congruence model is one of the early coping theories that emphasize the importance of cultural context. As well, he is a pioneer in research on stress and coping in the Chinese elderly. His edited volume (with Prem Fry as co-editor) on The Human Quest for Meaning Lawrence (Erlbaum Associates, Publishers) has contributed to the current interest in meaning research.

Lilian C. J. Wong (Ed.), received her B.Sc. (Toronto), M.A. (Educational Psychology,��University of Texas at Austin), and Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia. She also completed courses in Special Education and Psychopathology from the University of California at Los Angeles. She is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of School Counselling of the Graduate Program in Counselling Psychology, at Trinity Western University, BC, Canada. She had held positions as Psychoeducational Consultant with the Peterborough County Board of Education, Ontario, and School Psychologist and Area Counsellor with the Vancouver School Board. Her primary research area is multicultural supervision competencies. Her Multicultural Supervision Competencies Questionnaire (developed with Paul Wong) has contributed to the conceptualization and measurement of multicultural supervision competencies. She has taken an active part in the Roundtable Discussions in Exploring Psychotherapy Supervision and Training, at APA Annual Conventions for the last few years. Her other research interests include cross-cultural assessment and counseling, emotional and social intelligence, and moral development. She has presented internationally workshops in play therapy and grieving in children and adolescents. She is currently on the Education Committee of BC Association for Play Therapy and on the board of the International Network on Personal Meaning. She is the editor of "A Journey of Courage" (a Commemorative Publication, Trinity Western University). She also is Vice-President of The Meaning-Centered Counselling Institute, Inc.

About the Author
Lionel Lambourne was head of paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, from 1986-1993. His books include The Aesthetic Movement (1996) and Victorian Painting (1999), both published by Phaidon.

Much More Than A "Coffee Table" Book

This book is a visual and intellectual treat.

Japonisme -- aka Japonism aka Anglo-Japanese -- is the influence of Japanese arts on the West and, in turn, the influence of Western arts (and Western buying tastes!) on Japan.

This cultural exchange was particularly rich after the re-opening of Japan to foreign ships in 1848.

Japonisme was, argues author Lambourne, spearheaded by the French who were particularly taken by Japanese print art of the ukiyo-e tradition. And some of the large names in the "fine" art of painting who were inspired by the Japanese include Bonnard, Mucha, Bearedsley, Klimt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cassatt, Degas, Renoir, Whistler, Monet and later figures such as Van Gogh.

But here's the thing. "Japonomania" was not simply a "high" aesthetic movement, but an all-encompassing popular trend that swept Europe and North America via ceramics, decorative objects, clothing, theatre, graphic design, furniture, novels, landscape and garden design, and practical objects -- fans, parasols, combs...

As you might imagine, Phaidon has produced a large, lavish, well-illustrated book here. However scholar and author Lambourne provides a fascinating, probing, inclusive text that discusses both the arts and the out-sized individuals who were involved in this movement. The book includes chapters on "The Novel, The Stage, and The Opera," "Visitors to Japan: Dream and Reality," and "Symbolism and the Grotesque."

The best praise I can lavish on this book is that the text informs the illustrations and the illustrations inform the text.

A look behind the sreen of Japan

Wow! It took me six months to complete reading this book. Not because it is boring, but because there is so much information to just mentally digest! But what a fascinating journey. Our cultures are intrigued by each other and have affected each other for over 200 years. The book explores that intrigue, often fraught with misunderstandings, but infatuation is never far behind. Look at all the soldiers from WWII who came home with Japanese brides. Another interesting parallel is the nature of commerce between the East and the West. The Japanese and American businessmen have both much in common and widely different ways of commerce. The artistic fascination of both cultures for each other's is also covered and is enlightening to say the least. While post-war Japan sought the shiny cars, the Elvis hair and all that was coolly iconic American, we turned a wistful eye to the quickly disappearing 'old' Japan of pristine gardens, village basket makers, tea houses, the geisha life, the floating landscapes, calligraphy masters, a pond full of priceless koi simply valued for their serene beauty. Has it all been traded in for cars and high-rises? For cheap but fabulous electronics? For designer bags and pop music? Time will tell, but this wonderful book will give you true insight to the collective mind of both the East and West.

A Very Special Critter arrived today & my daughter and I have already read it. We always enjoy the critter books but this one is going to be a favorite. There is a new student joining critter's class who arrives in a wheelchair looking very frightened. Before long critter and his friend's realize the new boy is no different than the rest of them and is good at some things (like volleyball & math) and needs help with others things just like critter (reaching high items). It's a sweet tale of accepting the differences in all of us and my daughter was riveted to the pages

Good Advice

Ignore your doubts, and score a new idea! I cannot say whether or not this book has or has not help me, because I am still not in a relationship, but I must say that the book get you thinking about your past and it helps you to understand why bad things happened and to move on from the past and look forward to a new start.

Just not that good

This book is mostly a copy of common advice given in pickup books that are far better. If you've read some of the really poplar ones: Mystery Method, Bang, Models..... This book will be a waste.

I knocked down one star for having zero originality, and being overly long. The book should have been under a hundred pages.

Another star is knocked down for the fact that the title is misleading. Your not using some new method of ignoring tactics. The author basically tells you to ignore your fear, ignore your neediness, ignore her $#!t tests, etc... You can tactfully ignore her tests, but telling you to ignore your emotions is for the most part not possible. Read Models by Mark Manson if you want to actually deal with why you feel the way you do.

And finally another star for simply being a bad book and wasting my time&money. I threw the book away. There really are far better. Those being MM, Bang(kinda), Models............ Hell, the Dicarlo Escalation ladder is better than this.

Robs book is the nuts

Robby the author of this book is a legend! I enjoyed reading every page. I bought this on iPhone and got to say it made me feel a bit better after a break up already. This book as I read in previous review is about learning your self it's a 5 star from me and it has links and email advice. I was bit worried about emailing and rob lays the law down but when u act weak u need to be strong in the mind body and soul to ever stop drowning in your sorrows and his email advice really helps. End of the day men an woman are different but that's the reason life and relationships are so fun even when they go sour. My advice to people would be chill and be happy with yourself because we all had ups and downs. Try stay up forget the down. Cheers Jack.
