Understanding American Politics, Second Edition, by Stephen Brooks, Douglas L. Koopman, J. Matthew Wilson

Understanding American Politics provides a unique introduction to the contemporary political landscape of the United States by using as its core organizing feature the idea of "American exceptionalism," a concept that is at least as old as Tocqueville's study of American democracy.

The second edition of Understanding American Politics maintains the unique strengths of the first edition while offering improved coverage of political institutions. A single omnibus chapter on institutions has been reorganized and split into three separate chapters on Congress, the presidency, and the courts. A new chapter on public opinion has also been included, and the chapter on religion and politics has been completely rewritten with a deeper appreciation of religion's influential role. The book has been revised throughout, taking into account the dramatic changes that have emerged since the 2010 congressional elections and the 2012 presidential election. The text also pays close attention to what is seen as the irreversible decline in America's global influence.

Review
For students not based in the US, this book's 'lightly comparative' approach makes it very accessible. Arguing the case for 'American exceptionalism' gives it a theme around which students can formulate their own views on various dimensions of US politics. (Donley T. Studlar, University of Strathclyde)

By focusing on what makes the U.S. system unique, the authors have written a truly original American politics text. Theirs is not a formulaic introductory volume, but rather one with a thematic focus that carries throughout the book and keeps students continually engaged. Nicely done! (Mark J. Rozell, George Mason University)

I applaud the authors' emphasis on the role of religion in American politics. From the civil rights movement to the Moral Majority, from those opposed to the Vietnam War to those opposed to legalizing same-sex marriage, religious beliefs have been an important driving force in bringing issues into the government's sphere of responsibility. It is an important and often overlooked dimension of American politics. (Cary R. Covington, University of Iowa)

Understanding American Politics is the most remarkable introduction to American politics I have read. With a genuinely Tocquevillian flare, this text artfully melds a clear-eyed and balanced analysis of the normative, behavioral, and structural forces at work in America's unique brand of political life. (Matthew S. Holland, President, Utah Valley University)

Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples, by Sherry A. Weddell

"It is not the same thing to have known Jesus as not to have known him, not the same thing to walk with him as to walk blindly, not the same thing to hear his word as not to know it…. We know that with Jesus life becomes richer."-Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel

In her first book, Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, Sherry Weddell, cofounder of the Catherine of Siena Institute, captured the attention of Catholics across the globe as she uncovered the life-changing power that accompanies the conscious decision to follow Jesus as his disciple.

Now, in the groundbreaking Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples, she has gathered together experienced leaders and collaborators whose exceptional field-tested wisdom and enthusiasm for transforming Catholic parishes into centers of discipleship and apostolic outreach is both inspiring and practical.

The authors consider:

  • The role of intercessory prayer in parish transformation
  • How "fireside chats" can help a pastor connect with his parishioners and call them to personal discipleship and mission
  • The co-responsibility of lay people and pastors in the work of making disciples
  • The revolutionary impact of a discipleship approach to youth ministry
  • How one parish successfully fostered a culture of intentional discipleship, and much more

As Sherry asks in her own chapter, "Are we willing to answer the call and pay the price necessary to become a new generation of saints through which God can do extraordinary things in our time?"

A book for those who want to know what it's like to "walk the walk" of the New Evangelisation
By Ann Yeong
If you are saturated from trying to understand Intentional Discipleship and the New Evangelisation at the conceptual level and have been asking, “Yes, but WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?”, this is the book for you!

In Sherry Weddell’s first book, “Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus,” Sherry laid out for us why Intentional Discipleship makes a crucial difference in the lives of Catholics and gave us a map of what the ‘developmental path’ to Intentional Discipleship looked like. Sherry also shared how parishes can start the process to become an evangelising parish that is effective in making intentional disciples.

In this much awaited sequel to Forming Intentional Disciples, readers are given the privilege of hearing from seasoned evangelisers who have been applying the principles of Forming Intentional Disciples in pastoral ministry for years and whose parishes are already seeing disciple-bearing fruits.

The writers range from the lay to the ordained and include parish priests/formators to lay pastoral workers and a youth minister with experiences spanning from the local parish to the regional and national level in the USA.

These pages tell the stories of how dedicated intentional disciples can become highly creative and unique instruments of the Holy Spirit in making passionate disciples through different ways. Though not explicitly stated, each of the ‘success stories’ told here are coloured by the different charisms of the main evangelists in each context - evangelism, intercessory prayer, leadership, administration, knowledge and teaching are just a few that leap from the pages.

You will read about re-imagining the Parish Pastoral Council (Chapter 3: Co-Responsible for the Mission of Christ), creative intercessory prayer (Chapter 2: Praying It Forward), ‘disciple-shaped youth ministry’ (Chapter 7: Rethinking Youth Ministry), spiritual conversation and accompaniment (Chapter 6: “Fireside Chats” and the Formation of the Laity), and transformation from a maintenance-oriented parish to a mission-oriented one (Chapter 4: Intentional Disciples - Bearing Spiritual Fruit That Sustains). Framing these chapters and setting them into context is Sherry Weddell’s thought-provoking and inspiring introductory chapter, “The Generation of Saints.”

This book is highly-recommended for all Catholics, and especially more so for those who are at the spearhead of the New Evangelisation in their parishes and communities.

I recently read this book and LOVED IT! It is NOT a step-by-step how-to book ...
By Rachel Caron
I recently read this book and LOVED IT!

It is NOT a step-by-step how-to book on how you can implement the principles from Sherry Weddell's first book, Forming Intentional Disciples (sorry!), but rather, an invitation for readers to use their Catholic imagination to dream about what a Parish transformed by a group of intentional disciples might look like. Those looking for a blueprint of what to do will be sadly disappointed. Those who are looking for evidence that this model works and can bear immense fruit in a variety of different contexts and through a variety of different applications will find precisely what they are looking for!

While I don't have time to write about what I loved about each chapter, here is a snapshot of what's inside:

The first chapter looks at what does it look like when a whole generation - of clergy and laity - form a spiritual community that actively supports its members in using their charisms for the building up of the kingdom of God? Hint: it unleashes immense spiritual power for the transformation of the world!!!

The second chapter looks at the spiritual power of prayer to transform a community. In fact, prayer is crucial if evangelization is to be effective. Since the Holy Spirit is the principle agent of evangelization, intercessory prayer is "initiated by the Holy Spirit so that we might dispose ourselves to the divine will and earnestly pray for its manifestation here on earth" (p. 36). In other words, prayer becomes the necessary first step- the catalyst - by which the Holy Spirit first begins to set his plan in motion.

Chapter three speaks about the co-responsibility of the laity in the mission of the Church. For too long, the laity have seen themselves as the passive recipients of the ministry of the Church, rather than as its primary agents. Changing this mentality changes everything.

The golden nugget of the fourth chapter are the two lists contrasting characteristics of a maintenance-driven Parish and a mission-driven parish. I wish every Parish staff would spend a whole day reflecting on this!

To be honest, I skipped chapter five... or I don't remember it. (sorry!)

Chapter six talks about fire-side chats. So often in ministry, we don't know who we're working with, or, we only know them cursorily. This is about investing in people, sitting down, sharing a meal, and really getting to know our people - and their gifts - and then fostering the type of relationship with them that allows us to form them for mission - to send them out into the world. This and the chapter on prayer were the two best take-home points for me!!!

Ok, running out of time, but this book rocks. Lots to ponder, lots to think about. Stop reading these reviews and just buy it already. You won't regret it!

Promises, but fails to deliver...
By Bill and Sheila Marty
I thought Weddell's first book, Forming Intentional Disciples, was excellent. It motivated me. Perhaps it's only weakness, in my estimation, is that it doesn't contain much of an action plan. When I saw this title, I figured I would find Sherry's action plan inside, or at least a variety of concrete actions by successful parishes around the country to move their parishioners through Weddell's thresholds of conversion toward discipleship.

Unfortunately, not. The book contains a lot of generality speak ("they chose a seven-week evangelizing experience"), and very little specific description of actions by parishes. Where there is specific description of actions, they are the actions of individuals which would be difficult to replicate with a group (e.g. the moving story of a woman who knocks on motel doors in the middle of the day and asks female occupants if she can pray with them). Most of the chapters are written by staffers of the Catherine of Siena Institute, which in itself wouldn't be a bad thing, except that they don't say anything useful to me about actions we can take in my parish to create more intentional disciples. At one point, Weddell's book mentions a parish that did an Easter book giveaway program, without mentioning Matthew Kelly or his Dynamic Catholic organization as the source of the idea and the books.

After reading two books by Weddell, the first one full of promise, I'm left with the strong impression that she has clearly identified the problem (that only about 5% of the people in our congregations are disciples), has tons of personal experience and data on the extent of the problem in parishes around the US, has some ideas on the reasons (culture of silence, etc.), but has no real idea of what to do to solve the problem. I wish Sherry Weddell and her Catherine of Siena Institute well. I hope they find some great ideas for actions parishes can take to make disciples, and when they do find these great ideas, I hope she writes another book. But, I can't recommend this book.

So You'd Like to Learn How Security Works in the Corporate World.
By Jeffrey W. Bennett
By Jeffrey W. Bennett, ISP, author of ISP Certification-The Industrial Security Professional Exam Manual and

Insider's Guide to Security Clearances

Frankly this is an excellent book that teaches the tremendous role security plays. Contrary to some corporate environments, this book teaches that security should not be run from the background. Mr. Sennewald does an excellent job of demonstrating how security should be conducted in a corporate environment. For most, the lessons taught here will involve a change in culture that is desperately needed to allow the security function at an executive level position and allow the security executive to function at all levels.

The first chapters consider the security professional and the roles, structure and environment of the security organization at all levels of a corporate structure. The rest of the book shows how to conduct security surveys and perform risk analysis. It also spends considerable time teaching security as a profession and is heavy into how leaders should lead and conduct themselves professionally. Quality work!

After many years of working in the government, I had been looking for the ultimate "how to" book of how security should be structured. This book gets it and teaches it well.

If you are looking for a study aid for the CPP, ISP or other security certification, add this to your library.

If you are planning on using this reference book in order to study for the CPP examination after the new ASIS International CPP consolidation of standards implementation circa November 2012, then you need to be aware of the below information:

---------------

After the new implementation the reference material for the CPP exam will no longer include the following books from the above link:

- Effective Security Management, 5th Ed

- Handbook of Loss Prevention and Crime Prevention, 5th Ed

- Introduction to Security, 8th Ed

*ASIS/SHRM Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention Standard (2011)

Although Jesus called on his first followers to welcome children in his name and to become like children, the lives of the first Christian children have remained in the shadows. This book explores the hidden lives of children at the origins of Christianity. It draws on insights gained from comparisons of children's experiences in ancient Judaism and the Graeco-Roman world. The authors also engage a vast body of early Christian literature, extending from the New Testament to sermons, letters, theological treatises, poetry, pedagogical manuals, and historiography in Greek, Latin, Syriac, and other languages current in the early Christian world.

The guiding question of the book focuses on how Christianity changed the lives of children in the ancient world. Some of the other questions examined by the authors include:

Did boys and girls both receive a formal education?

Were Christian children slaves?

How did they participate in manual labor?

What kinds of games did children play?

How did children become a part of the Christian church?

This book breaks new ground in the study of early Christianity by examining the challenges to Christian childhood in the first centuries of the Church. The authors look at violence perpetrated against children, and they consider the effects and opportunities arising from Christians' experiences of martyrdom, and from the increased Christian interest in various forms of asceticism, including celibacy. The book brings into the open the lives of early Christian children and throws much needed light on what has been a largely neglected area of study in early Christianity.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"With careful examination of the available evidence, the authors painstakingly sift through what can be known about children in early Christianity, and in doing so they offer new evaluations of old conclusions and significantly advance our understanding of this important topic for the social history of early Christianity."--Carolyn Osiek, Charles Fischer Professor of New Testament, Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University

"This volume provides a wealth of detail about childhood, family structure, becoming an adult, and marriage in antiquity as well as renunciation of family ties in Christian asceticism. The authors pay careful attention to the impact of gender, class, and slave or free status on children's lives, and incorporate such unusual topics as toys, games, pets, and music. They argue that children from the beginning were welcome participants in all facets of Christian communal life. Clearly written and well-documented, this book is a valuable resource for students at all levels."--Pheme Perkins, professor of theology, Boston College

"Horn and Martens survey a wealth of textual sources for the study of children and childhood in early Christianity. . . . The book is valuable as a comprehensive survey of early Christian textual sources on children and childhood; handy indexes of biblical, classical, and patristic passages add to its usefulness. . . . The chapters on family life and work and play would make useful course readings. . . . Recommended."--J. Schott, Choice

"Chapters of this work are set up topically and it contains an excellent bibliography, index of biblical references and ancient authors, and an index of subjects and modern authors. Thus, it ser

Outstanding - revelations about how Christianity changed the lives of children
By Jeri
Christianity revolutionized the treatment of children in the ancient world. Perhaps the most spectacular alteration was in the use of children as sexual playthings. Both ancient Greece and ancient Rome regarded using little boys, especially slaves, or the children of the poor, as objects of desire.

A slave had no rights over his body, and it was regarded as legal and not immoral in the least to use the slave sexually. Both little boys and little girls were used sexually, although it appears little boys were preferred. The boys were considered of interest sexually until they sprouted body hair, which gives some idea of the age of the children abused. After the master had used the slave, the slave could also obtain money for his master by being sent to one of the many boy brothels in Rome. (Pick up a copy of "The Economy of Prostitution in Rome" for a fuller treatment).

Christianity, of course, viewed this as utterly immoral. Many Christians wrote scathing denunciations of such practices, such as Tatian, who pointed out that, at least in this matter, the barbarians, whose cultures despised such things, were more moral. Tatian bitterly criticized "the Romans...for gathering herds of boys for this purpose" (p 230).

In the area of protecting children "from sexual advances...may be the one area of morality in which early Christianity was truly counter-cultural" (p 231).

The ancient world, including the Second Temple Jews, regarded a girl as ready for marriage between the ages of 12 to 14. Boys, on the other hand, appear to have been older at the age of marriage, perhaps in the late teens or early twenties. This seems to have held true across all the cultures in the Roman empire.

Where Jewish and later Christians differed from the other cultures was the importance they placed on the child. "In significant strands of Judaism, the family is based upon the child" (p 72). Because every child had an immortal soul, Christians taught their children early the truths of Christianity and brought them to Christian gatherings to participate. "The process of socializing children into the Christian Church was closely related to the quality and extent of the religious education and formation the children received" (p 271).

They also strove to keep their children from the immoral influences all around them. John Chrysostrom insisted young men should be kept away from the theater, for example, since ''the sight of naked women uttering shameful words'" (p 157) should be avoided. Chrysostrom urged boys to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays, pray, and to be taught to fear hell.

Children had toys and games similar to many today. One I had never heard of was tying a rattle around the neck of a baby. Every time the baby moved, the rattle would jingle and amuse the child. Tops, hoops, balls, and dolls were all available, although many of the dolls appear to be based on pagan gods, and therefore were likely unused by Christian children.

I would also strongly recommend the book "When Children Became People", which also deals with the changes Christianity brought to the ancient world for children.

Climatology textbook
By Weather Guy
I really like this textbook, it is organized well and very informative. There are several topics in this book that are not covered in others. The text is easy to read and follow and contains many useful figures and diagrams. I especially liked Chapters that focused on Climate Change and Variability and Anthropogenic Climatic Changes. This book is structured in a way that makes it ideal for an introductory or advanced Climatology course.

GREAT BOOK
By D. E. Martin
This is an exceptional book to use for teaching the basics of economy to younger students. As a teacher we are required to teach about wants and needs, and we can easily discuss the difference between what you want vs what you really need. This book is an excellent resource to teach the concept with assistance of more in-depth understanding. Would recommend for teachers and parents alike, but it really helped me in teaching my unit.

Excellent

Teaching the difference between needs and wants is part of the kindergarten curriculum where I live. This book was perfect for teaching that things that help you stay alive are needs, and everything else is a want. Easy to understand text and fun pictures.
However, when reinforcing later with the class, several tried to tell me a cell phone was a need, because their parents couldn't live without theirs. Sigh. Good thing the book doesn't cover cell phones.
