Mukherjee's magisterial history of cancer research is poorly served by Stephen Hoye's impersonal, tone-deaf narration. Mukherjee is a practicing oncologist, and his is a deeply personal account, replete with stories of his own patients and practice, that begs for an intimate reading. *Starred Review* Apparently researching, treating, and teaching about cancer isn’t enough of a challenge for Columbia University cancer specialist Mukherjee. He was also moved to write a biography of a disease whose name, for millennia, could not be uttered. The eminently readable result is a weighty tale of an enigma that has remained outside the grasp of both the people who endeavored to know it and those who would prefer never to have become acquainted with it. An unauthorized biography told through the voices of people who have lived, toiled, and, yes, died under cancer’s inexorable watch. Mukherjee recounts cancer’s first known literary reference—hence its birth, so to speak—in the teachings of the Egyptian physician Imhotep in the twenty-fifth century BCE, in which it is clear that Imhotep possessed no tools with which to treat what appears to be breast cancer. His cryptic note under “Therapy:” “There is none.” Throughout cancer’s subsequent years, many more physicians and scientists with names both familiar and obscure attempted and occasionally succeeded in deciphering or unlocking keys to many of the disease’s mysteries. Alas, this is not a posthumous biography, but it is nonetheless a surprisingly accessible and encouraging narrative. --Donna Chavez

read it after your treatment

Last April I was diagnosed with acute leukaemia. After a stem cell transplant I am coming up for a year.

When you are told you have cancer you are bewildered. You are also very angry. I asked myself was there something I had done in my past that was going to deprive me seeing my two sons grow up into happy young men and dads. The first two weeks go by in a weird nightmare. Day 17 your hair falls out. Your peeing orange from the chemo drugs, which have put me off lucozade for life. You double check all your insurances are up to date and update a well to make sure my wife does not have any hassles with the tax authorities. At the age of 44 you are very angry. You realise you are likely going to die. You are angry because you have no idea what is doing it. What you planned for when you were older is all meaningless. But, thanks to certain stubbornness and amazing treatment and care, and a generous sift of life from a German donor of life giving stem cells, I am alive.

This book helps explain many of the questions I had. It does it in a way that makes sense if you don't have a degree in science. What was until recently a death sentence is no longer the case. The battle against cancer was waged by intrepid individuals, and this book explains the war so far. It outlines the causes of cancer, whether it is a virus, bacteria, induced by smoking or chemicals, or just our own body playing up and turning on itself. It explains how our own understanding is still basic but advancing year by year, and treatments, if not cures, are being found for many, although not all cancers.

I learned that was once a death sentence is not the case today. I am looking forward to see my sons become men. This book gave me clarity, it gave me hope.

An insider's view of cancer

I only read this book because Ken Burns produced a documentary on it that is coming out in the Spring of 2015. I really love Ken Burns documentaries, hence the interest. Across the book, there is only one common character, cancer. Although cancer is not a single disease but a collection of several diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of cells in the body, the book portrays cancer as a great villain, lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at any time. What makes this story different and far from dry is the way S. Mukherjee tells it: "the story of leukemia - the story of cancer - isn't the story of doctors who struggle and survive, moving from one institution to another. It is the story of patients who struggle and survive, moving from one embankment of illness to another. Resilience, inventiveness, and survivorship — qualities often ascribed to great physicians — are reflected qualities, emanating first from those who struggle with illness and only then mirrored by those who treat them. If the history of medicine is told through the stories of doctors, it is because their contributions stand in place of the more substantive heroism of their patients."

Across the book, we are also introduced to ways of fighting or stalling the advance of cancer: radical surgery and radical mastectomy, X-rays, cytotoxics, monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors and S. Mukherjee explains really well how all of the above function (or don't function in some cases). One of the strengths of the book is that it gives a behind the scenes look at how certain drugs or procedures came to be (Druker's struggles with developing imatinib) or how other procedures were proven to be too radical and changed such as Halsted's radical mastectomy.

The fight to find a cure for cancer has triggered enormous social forces in the 20th century and in the book we are introduced to some of the main characters: Sidney Farber and the Jimmy Fund, Mary Lasker and the American Cancer Society both determined to enact policy changes that will get more resources allocated to the war against cancer. These are just a few figures in this war, but there were other forces as well that fought for cigarette labeling for example, or more personal struggles related to compassionate drug use.

S. Mukherjee ends the book on a more positive note. All throughout the book we get the impression that primitive forces are battling a very complex disease, using disfiguring surgery or drugs that oftentimes end up causing cancer themselves. The final few chapters are not so gloomy, he takes a molecular biologist's view of the disease and explains our current understanding of the processes and pathways involved and you do get the impression that by 2050 we will be able to target the specific pathways and mutations that make up a particular form of cancer.

One of the best books and also now one of the best Documentary's out there. This is a 3 episode, three disc, exploration and history of one of the greatest mass murderers of all time, CANCER. This documentary is a thoughtful, moving, emotional journey into everything about cancer and what all the doctors, nurses, researchers and victims have gone through. Possibly one of the best, if not the best research examples ever done in written form, and now film form. I have read the book also which I highly recommend and now I highly recommended the 3 Disc Documentary that Ken Burns has created. I have never been so glued, moved, brought to tears as I have by this documentary. Not only does this book and documentary explore the vast history of this horror, but it also puts a face on this monster. It showcases the pain and suffering of those who are ravaged by this beast. It gives an example of not just a word but a living, breathing human being.

Siddhartha Mukherjee is one of the finest human beings to ever grace book form, his book brought to life this horrible reality. He not only brought a face to the monster, but he allowed you to understand the history, and massive exploration for treatment and hopefully one day a cure. In a sense both Siddhartha Mukherjee and Ken Burns has given a voice to this darkness that slowly is causing thousands to die, suffer, or go through.

Not only does this book and documentary explore the vast history of this horror, but it also puts a face on this monster. It showcases the pain and suffering of those who are ravaged by this beast. It gives an example of not just a word but a living, breathing human being.

Cancer sadly runs in my family. My sister died of Spinal Cancer. One Aunt died of colon cancer. One Aunt died of Pancreatic Cancer. One Aunt Lung and Brain Cancer. One Uncle Brain Cancer. One Uncle Lung and Brain Cancer. One Uncle Esophagus Cancer. One Uncle Lung Cancer. My Great Grandfather Prostate Cancer. My Dad is a survivor of Prostate Cancer. So I have seen it, experienced its wrath. See the brutality of this beast. I feel the book and Ken Burns Documentary is a prime example of how to look at this Emperor of All Maladies.

A perfect book. A perfect film. Both should be owned, read and watched, taught and expressed to others. Wonderful examples of research both in written form and visual form. Perfection.

This is Fowler's third, and perhaps strangest, book about Betty Andreasson (now Mrs. Robert Luca). There is a little bit of everything here--out-of-body/near-death experiences, Christian spirituality, and ancient astronauts. By way of hypnotic regression, Luca was able to provide details about her numerous abductions, and her drawings, included in this book, clarify her verbal descriptions of alien machinery and enigmatic activities. One of the best resources in book form on the alien agenda

I have studied this subject for over 40 years and even recently had an experience that confirmed that I am an abductee myself. I am a computer consultant, x-Special Forces, a college graduate, father of two.
The information is unsettling, but if you are intensly pursuing this subject you may be more involved than you think. The interceded to save me from dying from blood poisioning and I have the scars to prove it.
Another great book, which provides detailed information, particurlaly on the development of a hybred species is The Threat by David M. Jacobs, Ph.D.

Hit and miss

The first half of this book continues the saga of Betty Luca (formerly Betty Andreasson of the Andreasson Affair) and is weird and riveting. Betty herself provides pencil-drawing illustrations, which makes it easier to follow the strangeness being described in the text.
But then Fowler starts going into his own supposed alien experiences, which are vague and not especially interesting. He goes on and on about weird (and completely pointless) coincidences in his life (like the time he got a phone call from someone named Baum when he just happened to be thinking about the Wizard of Oz - who cares!?!), and then treats us to blow-by-blows of his inconclusive hypnosis sessions, which shed precious little light on anything. He spends four whole chapters telling us his story, but there really isn't much for him to tell. Interesting stories to tell your friends, maybe, but nothing worth writing a book about.
The Betty half of the book is definitely worth reading, though. It certainly won't be convincing to the skeptic, but it's a page-turner.

Abductions just down the street.

When I met Ray Fowler in Oct. 1997, he was giving a presentation about UFO's in Beverly Mass. at the Masonic Lodge. I am a sci fi fan and had a fairly well rounded knowledge of the subject.
What I did not know was that some of the events in The Watchers (signed) occured "just down the street" from where we were!
I will always reserve full judgement on the phenomenon itself until I actually experience it. But the book was very detailed about the experiences brought out under hypnosis.

Eric Twiname was an active dinghy sailor, a keen team racer and a Laser National Champion. Great Dinghy Sailing Primer

This book was recommended to me by a friend and former collegiate racer. It's every bit as good as she suggested. It is clearly written and for the most part, concise. Having read other books on sailing that are deeply informative but often so densely packed with ideas as to be obtuse and require re-reading, it is a pleasure to read a book that speaks so clearly about the subtleties of helming a dinghy. This book is a great first book for aspiring helms. Mastering it's contents will lay the foundation for the more exhaustive treatises on sailboat racing.

Good back to the basics...

Good back to the basics concepts that helps keep you grounded in what is really important. To often we get caught up in new sails, lines and gadgets. Have a few bad tacks or miss a persistent shift and you will not likely be on the front of the fleet. I really like how Eric lays out the concepts. Its the kind of book I wish I would have read 25 years ago.

Will the Real Anti-Christ please stand up!

This book is a must read for all people interested in End Times. You really don't even have to be a religious person to appreciate Walid Shoebat's very solid case for his view that the Bible's Anti-Christ is Islam's promised Messiah the Al Mahdi. You don't even have to believe in God to see that his evidence is pretty compelling.

It is extremely detailed and pulls no punches on things. This book by Walid Shoebat is going shake the foundation of what many Bible believers have been told over the last 50 to 100 years. This book is going to help many Christians to better understand what part Islam plays in the End Times. Surely many Christians who have never read about Islam's Messiah the Al Mahdi are going to be shocked out of their comfort zones by the findings in this book because they have been taught for so long to be looking to Europe for the Anti Christ.

This Ex-Islamic Terrorist Walid Shoebat heavily supports his ideas about Islam's awaited Messiah the Al Mahdi being the Bibles Anti-Christ from front to back. He basically says that today's acts of Islamic Terrorism are really practice runs for the return of Islam's promised Messiah the Al Mahdi by today's overly impatient and eager Islamic Terrorists. I have read numerous authors on End Times and Walid puts many of them to shame. I really appreciate his ability to relate what he learned while being a Muslim and his detailed point by point illumination of things like the Madhi's attributes that mirror what the Bible says about the Anti-Christ. Things like his personal explanation for how Muslims react to one of the unpleasant names among the 99 names of Allah are just an example of the insight he brings to his work. He tells colorful stories within the book of his Muslim thinking as a Islamic Terrorist that allows the reader to understand why when he was a Muslim Terrorist he thought he was on the right side or "The Good Guys" as he has puts it until he was challenged to put up or shut up about Islam being the true religion by his wife.

The biggest reason I think his work is so different and more accurate is his middle eastern upbringing and non-Hellenized perspective that allows him to uncover End Times truths that so many in the west have been missing.

Send this to your secular friends because they are going to get their answers from you or some secular book author who tells them the Anti-Christ is a myth or that all religions have the same kind of fables in essence leading them to be scoffers at Gods word.

This will challenge many believers. This kind of truth is powerful for breaking down Myths that secular people and Confused Christians going to many Churches are being fed. Walid's book is a great tool to help wake the Sleeping Church and those outside of faith. It clearly shows that only the uniformed can claim Allah and YHWH the God of the Bible are the same. They are not and Walid's book clearly reveals this and the shocking reality that we are engaged in a battle with the armies of Anti-Christ in 2009.

Second Coming Like the First One

Just like most of the religious community completely missed or misunderstood Jesus' first coming, we are poised for a repeat before the second coming. While most western prophecy teachers will never update their charts and admit they are wrong, Walid comes along and tells the truth. I have long believed that "Popular Prophecy" would totally miss the point of what the Bible actually teaches. If you read this book and are not convinced that we are very close to Armegeddon and that Islam is the anti-christ kingdom, it will probably be because of all the prophecy fluff that has flooded Christian bookstores and misled many. Thanks Walid for your boldness, research and spirit. I can't recommend this book enough!

Simply a masterpiece!

I have studied Bible Prophecy for many years. When I received this book, I simply could not put it down. The logic presented in this book is outstanding and answers many questions that I had after reading a great number of current Prophecy interpretations. This book identifies the Mark of the Beast, the anti-Christ and the false prophet in great detail using the Holy Scriptures as a base. I will continue to question and study, but this book has provided a new perspective on Islam that needs to be broadcast across the planet. This is a "must read" at any price!

In what her preface describes as "this scrapbook, this witness of the black experience in miniature," Bolden (The Book of African-American Women) presents a pastiche of visuals and narratives spotlighting American children of African descent, from colonial times to the present. An abundance of period photographs, paintings, drawings and handsomely set-off extracts from memoirs, letters and journals create the appearance of a scrapbook or album; more importantly, they allow readers to immerse themselves directly in the historical past. An 1861 photograph of children outside an orphanage in New York City, for example, adds immediacy to the accompanying information that the orphanage was looted and set on fire during the Draft Riots of 1863. The first-hand accounts are often heartrending: in an 1868 letter to a Sunday school class in the North, a seven-year-old from Alabama whose mother has died and whose father "went off with the Yankees" writes, "Perhaps I shall get on the cars some time and come to see you. Would you speak to a black boy?" Bolden's overview meanders at times, but it is filled with intriguing, little-known facts, e.g., in March 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks touched off the Montgomery bus boycott by refusing to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin of Birmingham, Ala., was arrested for the same offense. This impressively researched, imaginatively presented history evokes deep appreciation for the struggles, perseverance and triumphs of young black Americans. Ages 9-12.

Can't recommend it highly enough!

Imagine a scrapbook compiled collectively and intimately by African Americans from the first recorded birth of a black child in Jamestown, through the Revolution, Civil War, Reconstruction and right up to our own time, amply illustrated with compelling images, literature, personal recollections, art works, cartoons and ephemera, and you might begin to picture this book. It's impossible to describe fully...you really have to experience it. I can't recommend this book highly enough...there's something new and amazing to be found on every page!

So glad we have this

This wonderful book recognizes and reinforces the tremendous diversity among African-American families, in cultural attitudes, in material wealth, in hometraining, and in every aspect of American life.

Page after page offers excerpts from scrapbooks, letters, and journals telling of life's struggles, yes, but also life's triumphs, aspirations, and observations. Very wonderful emphasis on education, education, education, and hometraining.

I consider hometraining to be hands-on learning, generation-to-generation, of mindfulness, manners, duty, self-respect, and an awareness of one's own potential.

I've had people talk to me about homeschooling. In my opinion, every parent had better be hometraining.

A good place to start? Start where Frederick Douglass started -- with "The Columbian Orator." The Columbian Orator: Containing a Variety of Original and Selected Pieces; Together with Rules; Calculated to Improve Youth and Others in the Ornamental and Useful Art of Eloquence
