Tom is successful by the measure of most. He is CFO at a small but lucrative internet startup company and engaged to a young Physician's Assistant. They live together in a designer rehabbed loft where property values are nearly worth their square footage in gold. With all of these seemingly tangible reasons for happiness he is miserable. His engagement has been more like a 3 year standoff and he is disenchanted with his career or lack thereof. What starts as a casual after work drink becomes ritual and before long he's become one of the fixtures at the bar near his office. He seeks succor in booze and eventually half falls for a woman his polar opposite that represents much of what he loathes. Is his self realization imminent or will he lose what little he has to hold onto?

It burrows into the psyche.
By jonathan
A gruelling yet compelling work. It digs down deep to expose the psychological complexity that comes from being trapped in a prison of the character's own making. It's not an easy read but it is a powerfully authentic one.

There's a bit of Tom in all of us
By Illiterate Degenerate
This is a good read. Here's why.

The story is about a guy named Tom. Tom is weak. Tom is snide. Tom usually has a backhanded comment about someone or something but usually lacks the courage to say it out loud. Tom is needlessly mean.

Tom is a bit like you, isn't he? He's like me, sometimes. We all have moments where we are a bit too close what Tom is. Don't think so?

This story gives you the opportunity to see things through the POV of someone like this. Its like watching a slow motion car wreck. We watch as Tom utterly fails in his relationships to other people, to himself, and to society. Marvel in the misanthropy. You can identify with that, can't you?

This is a good read. Dialogue in the story is easy and flows well. The author vividly describes scenes from bars we've all been too, parties thrown by stuck up people we've all been forced to go through, the subtle nuances of a shot of that whiskey you like.

Tom of All Trades Is A Home Run
By Alan
Major League Baseball started in the year 1869. There have been 18,336 who have played in the MLB. Of all those players only 115 have hit a Home Run at their very first plate appearance. Amazing right? I'm very pleased to tell you fellow readers that Ms. Wardell has hit a Home run. Tom of All Trades is relatable, engaging, and a delight for the brain. As an avid reader of books in general I love a great book that's hard to put down. I found myself carrying this novel with me as if I were a cowboy in the old west with my gun in my holster everywhere I went. If you're in need of a great read I encourage you to dive into the mind of Tom. I know when you reach the last page you'll be yearning for the follow up to a wonderful written story.

Romantic Geography: In Search of the Sublime Landscape, by Yi-Fu Tuan

Geography is useful, indeed necessary, to survival. Everyone must know where to find food, water, and a place of rest, and, in the modern world, all must make an effort to make the Earth—our home—habitable. But much present-day geography lacks drama, with its maps and statistics, descriptions and analysis, but no acts of chivalry, no sense of quest. Not long ago, however, geography was romantic. Heroic explorers ventured to forbidding environments—oceans, mountains, forests, caves, deserts, polar ice caps—to test their power of endurance for reasons they couldn't fully articulate. Why climb Everest? "Because it is there." Yi-Fu Tuan has established a global reputation for deepening the field of geography by examining its moral, universal, philosophical, and poetic potentials and implications. In his twenty-second book, Romantic Geography, he continues to engage the wide-ranging ideas that have made him one of the most influential geographers of our time. In this elegant meditation, he considers the human tendency—stronger in some cultures than in others—to veer away from the middle ground of common sense to embrace the polarized values of light and darkness, high and low, chaos and form, mind and body. In so doing, venturesome humans can find salvation in geographies that cater not so much to survival needs (or even to good, comfortable living) as to the passionate and romantic aspirations of their nature. Romantic Geography is thus a paean to the human spirit, which can lift us to the heights but also plunge us into the abyss.

Review
"Tuan locates romantic geography in the heroic quests that won a deep understanding of place, the more remote and challenging the better. His vision of humanity's persistent hunger to reject familiar comfort for the new and strange is highly persuasive."—William Howarth, author of Walking with Thoreau

"Yi-Fu Tuan's examples are bracing, from Captain Nemo to the Adelie penguins. Few people can match his knowledge and ability to write reasonably and resoundingly about important themes and to link those themes to individual meaning, binding people to place."—Paul F. Starrs, author of Black Rock

“Called ‘one of the greatest living geographers,’ Tuan waxes rhapsodic about the Earth and humans’ relationship to it in this lovely little tome. He offers readers insight into famed explorers such as Ernest Shackleton and David Livingstone, reminding us that there was a time when geographers were akin to rock stars. Tuan finds poetry in geography, and readers will learn much about history and sustainability from his words.”—77 Square

About the Author

Quest . . . is at the heart of romance. Explorers are driven by the desire to know the source of the Nile, what it is like at the Poles or on top of the highest mountain, with no worldly recompense in mind. Astronomers are glued to their telescopes, located on a mountain or in the desert, peering at stars that shine brightly but were in fact extinct millions of years ago. If one wonders, what for? the answer may well be that they delight in romances of the mind.—excerpt from Romantic Geography The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America, by Andrés Reséndez

A landmark history — the sweeping story of the enslavement of tens of thousands of Indians across America, from the time of the conquistadors up to the early 20th century

Since the time of Columbus, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet, as Andrs Resndez illuminates in his myth-shattering The Other Slavery, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors, then forced to descend into the “mouth of hell” of eighteenth-century silver mines or, later, made to serve as domestics for Mormon settlers and rich Anglos.
Resndez builds the incisive case that it was mass slavery, more than epidemics, that decimated Indian populations across North America. New evidence, including testimonies of courageous priests, rapacious merchants, Indian captives, and Anglo colonists, sheds light too on Indian enslavement of other Indians — as what started as a European business passed into the hands of indigenous operators and spread like wildfire across vast tracts of the American Southwest.

The Other Slavery reveals nothing less than a key missing piece of American history. For over two centuries we have fought over, abolished, and tried to come to grips with African-American slavery. It is time for the West to confront an entirely separate, equally devastating enslavement we have long failed truly to see.

Review
“Resndez corrects a blind spot in our understanding of North American history and illuminates mechanisms by which present-day versions of the practice endure.”—The New Yorker

"This book is, arguably, one of the most profound contributions to North American history published since Patricia Nelson Limerick's "Legacy of Conquest" and Richard White's "The Middle Ground." But it's not necessary to be into history to understand its power: Our world is still the world Resndez so eloquently anatomizes." —Los Angeles Times

"No other book before has so thoroughly rleated the broad history of Indian slavery in the Americas, and not just its facts but the very reason it has been overlooked." —San Francisco Chronicle

"Resndez is adept at untangling the intertribal slave trade, as well as the pernicious behavior of white settlers in northern California."—Philadelphia Inquirer

"With his new book, Resndez joins a small but growing group of historians reexamining the scope and nutre of slavery in the Southwest and Native America."—Santa Fe New Mexican

“Every now and then a new book comes along that throws a switch on our historical valences and makes us see ourselves anew. The Other Slavery is one such book. Much asBury My Heart at Wounded Knee did when it first appeared in the early 1970s, Andrs Resndez's carefully sifted work fundamentally reshapes our understanding of a great enduring mystery: What really accounts for the swift and tragic demise of our continent's indigenous peoples?”
—Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder and In the Kingdom of Ice

“InThe Other SlaveryAndrs Resndezretells a vast section of Native American and North American history by putting forced labor in its multiple forms at the center. The result is a revealing, tragic, and heartbreaking history.”
—Richard White, Margaret Byrne Professor of American History, Stanford University

"The Other Slavery is a necessary work that occupies a loaded historical landscape; Resndez keeps a deliberate scholarly distance from the material, bringing forth evidence and constructing careful — even conservative — arguments. But that evidence speaks for itself, and the horrors quietly pile up."
— NPR.org

"We all know that Christopher Columbus and his successors enslaved the natives in the New World. Resndez (History/Univ. of California, Davis; A Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca, 2009, etc.) exposes the broad brush that the "other slavery" wielded. The extinction of the indigenous peoples of America is usually written off as the effect of diseases introduced by Spanish soldiers and colonists. Not so, says the author; it took only 60 years after Columbus' discovery for a cataclysmic population collapse. They died from slavery, overwork, and famine. Resndez examines the methods of enslavement, from the 15th-century Caribbean to 19th-century California, and his approachable style eases reading difficult personal stories of slavery and cruelty. That there are so many individual stories illustrates the author's wide-ranging research. Columbus initially intended to transport Indians to Europe in a "reverse middle passage," but he was thwarted by Ferdinand and Isabella's opposition to slavery as well as the need for labor in the mines. In 1542, the Spanish crown passed the New Laws, outlawing slavery, and procuradores, specialist lawyers, were appointed to sue for freedom of those illegally enslaved. Resndez shows how inconvenient laws were bypassed. First, the parameters of who could be enslaved were not necessarily strictly defined. While the royals insisted their people be treated as vassals, those who enslaved them just changed the nomenclature and methods. Colonists were granted encomiendas, grants of Indians to overlords, or repartimientos, compulsory labor drafts. The growth of peonage—debt slavery—provided even more slave labor. Eventually, Mexican silver mines turned to New Mexico to supply slaves, which gives the author the opportunity to provide the history of peoples in the Southwest. As the Mormons bought slaves to "civilize" them, the Spanish initially enslaved people to "Christianize" them. Both merely created an underclass. This eye-opening exposure of the abuse of the indigenous peoples of America is staggering; that the mistreatment continued into the 20th century is beyond disturbing."
—Kirkus

"Resndez (A Land So Strange), a professor of history at the University of California, Davis, details the ways in which Native Americans were subjected to enslavement throughout the Americas. When the U.S. gained California and other southwestern territories from Mexico in 1848, it also acquired a significant number of Indian slaves who were “entrapped by a distinct brand of bondage… perpetrated by colonial Spain and inherited by Mexico.” This form of enslavement ran parallel to that endured by people of African descent throughout colonial Latin America and, Resndez argues, generated an even more disastrous population loss. He notes the ways in which the “other slavery” defies simple definitions, relating how it was so widespread and deeply rooted in the economy and society of the Americas that it lasted even longer than that of African slavery, persisting in the guise of debt peonage into the 20th century. Emphasizing the variety of experiences of unfree labor suffered over five centuries by individuals from communities as culturally diverse and geographically separate as the Maya, the Apache, and indigenous Caribbeans, Resndez vividly recounts the harrowing story of a previously little-known aspect of the histories of American slavery and of encounters between indigenes and invaders. "
— Publisher's Weekly

"Today, with the complex and myriad effects of globalization frequently in the news, human trafficking has managed to endure. The Other Slaveryboth reminds and cautions: Man’s inhumanity to man is still making history."
— Book Page

“At a time when we are struggling to come to grips with the legacy of our long-time African slavery experience, it is only right that we should also acknowledge and inform ourselves of the human tragedy endured by the indigenous people of this hemisphere from Columbus’ first contact to the present.”
— New York Journal of Books

Outstanding!
By Christina Paul
The story of the Americas is a rich one. However, there is a vast difference between what the majority of us are taught in schools and the reality. America, be it the United States, Mexico, Central and South America or the Caribbean Islands were all built on slavery. The idea of slavery conjures up images of Africans forcibly and horrifically taken from their homelands in Africa and imported to be forced labor here. What is not discussed is that there were long before the import of the first African slaves to the Americas, and very long after they were emancipated, the slavery of Indigenous Peoples of various Indian Nations for the longest time. This book, from the introduction onward, is a detailed and heart-wrenching account that “Indian slavery never went away, but rather coexisted with African slavery from the sixteenth all the way through to the late nineteenth century.”

While we really can’t compare and contrast the number of African slaves (some 12.5 million) to the estimated numbers of Indian slaves (between 2.5 to 5 million), the stain and the horror was no less. Even with the addition of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments that essentially abolished slavery in the United States, the wording made it possible to continue the enslavement of Indians through the whole of the nineteenth century and in some areas into more remote areas in the early portion of the twentieth century. The language contained within those two Amendments, according to Resendez, was made to focus more on slaves of African decent and left out those who were Indians. It allowed Indian slavery to be a well kept secret, but something that still went on. Even today, in parts of central and South America, the practice does continue - in the form of debt peonage or labor camps for those who have allegedly broken laws of the Dominant Culture that Indigenous People are forced to live under.

As a woman of Indigenous ancestry, in our family we were taught a great many things about the history of the United States from an Indigenous perspective. Even the knowledge that is handed down among families and cultures does not touch on some of the horrific details and systematic practices of slavery of Indios or Indians. In college, I had a fantastic professor that taught us in detail about the caste structure in Spanish-held areas in the Americas from the days of the Conquistidores. Penensulares (Elites), the Creoles, the Mestizos, the Mulattoes, the Indios, the Zambos, and the Africans. The level of human exploitation went far beyond and for a longer period of time than I even had an idea about. It is good to be informed and to have someone spend so much time assembling information that is spotty at best and putting together a picture that even Indigenous People from Nations effected such as the Apache, Zuni, and other Southwestern Tribes as well as how entire vast populations were wiped out not just because they most often fell victim to diseases brought by the European invaders that they had no defenses against, but in dying of these diseases there was an ever increasing demand to replace those Indians that were put into slavery.

Andres Resendez has made a book that should be required reading in high school and college. The author insists that this book is not meant to be an end-all-be-all on the topic of the Other Slavery, but I think it comes pretty close. The Other Slavery really should be on every reading list for anyone who is interested in Native American history.

The Other Slavery is a sobering book. It is at times hard to read. I found myself crying and angry and most often just completely flabbergasted at the sheer obliviousness that we as a country seem to have when it comes to the topic of human trafficking, how rife it was and has been, and just how long it’s been going on. We as a country are complicit in what happened and we need to begin acknowleging that fact. There were things I was never taught both by family or in school and Resendez outlines various rebellions and historical points with so much detail. As difficult as this book was to read for me as an Indigenous woman, if I could give it ten stars, I would.

Shining a Spotlight on Shadow Slavery
By ck
Sixty-two years after the U.S. Supreme Court declared desegregation illegal, parts of our nation are still coming to grips with the essential inhumanity of black slavery and the silent creeping prejudice that remains.

With “The Other Slavery,” Andrs Resndez summons our attention to an equally shameful heritage America shares with other nations in the “New World,” the four-century-long enslavement and servitude of Indians.

Enslavement of these two very different groups existed side by side for three centuries, but as Resndez points out, the very legality of African slavery made it quite visible even as it was occurring and today in the historical record.

By contrast, he writes, Indian slavery was largely illegal and “its victims toiled, quite literally, in dark corners and behind locked doors.” Thus, these people were robbed of their freedom while they lived, and denied general acknowledgment of their suffering after they died. Resndez estimates that 2.5 million to 5 million Indians were taken into slavery in the New World. Of these, he believes that 147,000 to 340,000 were from North America, excluding Mexico. (He posits that Indian enslavement in Mexico and Central America comprised an additional 590,000 to 1.4 million people.)

I gravitated to the section of the book in which Resndez addresses slavery and servitude after the end of the Civil War and found it both clearly substantiated and heartbreaking. The scale and scope were devastating, as were the uneven Federal attempts to eradicate it. Here, as throughout the book, Resndez’s notes provide amplification and names of resources students/readers can seek out for further information.

Resndez writes with great clarity and specificity, and provides rich context throughout. His statements are buttressed by academic research and data, as well as a notes section that is almost 100 pages long. Maps provide amplification and visual context. This book is difficult to read not because of its composition, but because of its content. Nonetheless, it is appropriate for high school and college students, as well as for those who would like to know more about this aspect of history.

A Must Read
By Darcia Helle
When you hear or see the word 'slavery', what comes to mind? As Andres Resendez points out, the vast majority of us will envision African slaves, over-crowded and disease-ridden boats, and southern plantations. While that is a tragic, inexcusable part of American history, Africans were not the only people enslaved during the early, tumultuous years of America's beginnings. The Native Americans who'd roamed the country freely, who'd called the land their own for centuries before Europeans appeared, suddenly found themselves ripped away from their homeland and families, bought, sold, and traded. This occurred in staggering numbers, over a period of centuries.

This book is exceptionally well researched, yet it does not read like a dry textbook. Yes, it's a fairly academic read, in that it's rich in detail, but the writing is alive with texture and emotion. Resendez takes us back to an America most of us wouldn't recognize, to a time when owning a person was somehow justified as a Christian act of kindness. People disguised greed and bigotry as a necessary and righteous behavior, enabling themselves to steal Indian children and put them to work in the name of God.

Resendez takes us from the early struggles with Mexico, up through the Civil War. Most of the focus here is on the American Southwest and Mexico, then over to the American West. He highlights the country's dichotomy in fighting a Civil War to free African slaves, while continuing the enslave a disturbing number of Native Americans. In closing, Resendez briefly discusses our world history of slavery, and how it has never gone away but only evolved into something else to fit the circumstances and skirt the law.

This is a powerful, well written, disturbing, must-read book that should be in every school, a part of every history curriculum, and read by every adult. We need to acknowledge our problematic past if we have any hope of preventing a disastrous future.

Crypt of the Vampire, by Dave Morris

In the middle of a lonely wood, as night falls, you come upon a half-ruined mansion where dwells the undead Lord Tenebron among his servitors – depraved mortals, creatures of darkness, and luckless adventurers enslaved to his will.

Your only hope of escape is to prevail against the dangers that beset you and battle your way to the very heart of the catacombs. There, in the deepest chamber of the vampire’s crypt, you must face him and try to end his reign of terror for all time.

This is fantasy adventure with a difference: YOU are the hero! A pencil, an eraser and two dice are all you need to embark on your quest. Success and vast riches - or failure and savage death – will depend on the decisions you make!

Crypt of the Vampire was originally published as the first in the classic Golden Dragon Gamebook series.

Golden Dragon: Crypt of the Vampire, a good read?
By Jon L.
Well the answer to my title is yes. This unlike other gamebooks I have read let the player name their character and gave me very open roleplaying decisions. I also like the excitement factor which the author is maintaining constantly. I loved how clever traps were thrown at my character and how I nearly reached failure in some of the traps. The illustrations in Crypt of the Vampire are well done too. The combat system the author uses is very simple and easy to pick up too so this game can be played by not only the seasoned roleplayer. My friend who normally does not roleplay even enjoyed this book. All together, I think that this is a great book which most people seeking a short fantasty trip or many will enjoy. Defintely a book which you should purchase!

This is what I was expecting!
By Wmpyr
The best choose your own adventure vampire book I've read.
The author's writing style sets the mood very well. This book did not feel too kiddy. A movie I can compare this to in feel would be, Young Sherlock Holmes. The book is not terribly difficult nor is it easy. Although I've heard people say it's on the difficult side. This book is meant to be played with dice, paper and of course making decisions by going to the right page. The ending is very suspenseful, and something to look forward to! Every good book like this has a worthy villain and this one is no exception. The vampire Lord Tenebron is a worthy adversary!

more in depth...
A short and easy read, a relatively thin book that can fit in your coat pocket.
Basically a "Choose your adventure book" that also requires paper, pencil & two dice, but it's possible to read through without doing so.

You are a generic hero that embarks on an adventure to defeat the vampire Lord Tenebron.
The main aspect of this book is to explore a creepy mansion while finding and collecting the right items to make it through the book and to also defeat Lord Tenebron.
You will encounter a hell hound, an elf, giant spider, barbarian, witch and other things that go bump in the night. Personally I wish that there were more encounters with vampire-esque things. A note worthy creative scene is when you encounter an old man to play a game of Chess.

The game is a little hard because there are some blind choices you have to make, and it seems like the only way to get it right for certain is from your experience of having been through both choices.

All in all a fun read, wait until you finally get to encounter Lord Tenebron for the final battle. They did a good job for that scene simply by the way they put the illustrations into the book.

Cheese Souffles

Serves 4

These light-as-air cheese puffs are rightly called souffles, despite their unconventional sabayon-type base. They are served floating on a rich cheese cream, called a fondue after the French word for melt.

4 eggs, separated
1/2 cup dry white wine
Salt and freshly ground pepper
4 oz. Parmesan cheese, freshly grated

For the Fondue

3/4 cup heavy cream 4 oz. Gruyere or other easy-melting cheese, grated

To Serve

Snipped chives
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Put the egg yolks and wine in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water (bain marie) and whisk them together until they reach the ribbon stage. Remove the bowl from the bain marie and whisk until the mixture is cool.

In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff. Fold the whites gently but thoroughly into the egg yolk mixture and add salt and pepper to taste.

Bring the cream to the boil in a pan and stir in the Gruyere until melted and smooth. Pour into four shallow ovenproof dishes.

Using two spoons, shape the egg mixture into quenelles and float on the fondue. Sprinkle each quenelle with one-quarter of the grated Parmesan. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes or until the souffles are puffed up and golden brown. Serve at once, sprinkled with snipped chives, with grated Parmesan cheese handed separately.

Alternative Flavorings

*Replace the Gruyere with blue cheese.
*Add a little rouille to the fondue.
*Add freshly chopped herbs to the fondue.

Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, Second Edition, by Y. C. Fung

The objective of this book remains the same as that stated in the first edition: to present a comprehensive perspective of biomechanics from the stand point of bioengineering, physiology, and medical science, and to develop mechanics through a sequence of problems and examples. My three-volume set of Bio mechanics has been completed. They are entitled: Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues; Biodynamics: Circulation; and Biomechanics: Motion, Flow, Stress, and Growth; and this is the first volume. The mechanics prerequisite for all three volumes remains at the level of my book A First Course in Continuum Mechanics (3rd edition, Prentice-Hall, Inc. , 1993). In the decade of the 1980s the field of Biomechanics expanded tremen dously. New advances have been made in all fronts. Those that affect the basic understanding of the mechanical properties of living tissues are described in detail in this revision. The references are brought up to date.

The Bible
By Ruben Agrelo
Professor Fung is considered the father of bioengineering and founder of biomechanics.

Winner of Timoshenko and Poiseulle medals he's an Engineer that started to study physiology when his mother was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1957.

I am trained as a Medical Doctor and Molecular Biologist but being the son of a Professor of Civil Engineering made me understand the importance that structural engineering has in Medicine and Biology.

Now I am interested in nuclear matrix and lamins(as they are connected to aging phenomena) so I am training myself in Biomechanics, and I found that this book is the strating point.

I recommend this book to all Structural Engineers,Biomedical Engineers, MDs and Cellular and Molecular Biologists that want to understand this field.

A Masterpiece in Biomechanics!
By H. Guo
What I would say is not a comprehensive review of what the great book talks, but just telling you a truth: if you have engineering and mathamatics background and wanna combine your background to do research in physiology, Fung's book is absolutely a must-buy. This book is profound, but it is actually rooted in nearly all fields of biomechanics research.
It is a conclusion for biomechanics research till 1980's; also this book is a truly great reference for all current researchers who are interested in biomedical research in point of view of a mathamatician and engineer.

Good Continuum Mechanical Treatment of Biomechanics
By AMF
I bought this book while in a course on the mechanics of complex fluids. I needed a book, dealing with blood rheology in a continuum mechanical approach. My professor suggested that I pick up this volume.

I found the book to be very readable. The writing style is clear and succinct. Each chapter contains mathematical, as well as historical, treatment of the topic. Although I bought this book for the chapters on blood rheology, I continued reading through the book for my own amusement.

I bought this book used, for around $40. At that price, this book was a good investment.

This story is very unlike The Neverending Story and Momo
By J. Maxon
As one of my favorite authors, reading every Michael Ende book is an important priority for me. However, let me warn you that this story is very unlike The Neverending Story and Momo. It is really just a sequence of short stories; each sounding like a recap of a dream (as Ende writes, somewhere between awake and asleep).

The illustrations, though fascinating, make little sense in relation to most of the stories. However, it is interesting to point out that they were drawn by Edgar Karl Alfons Ende, Michael's father, who was a Germany surrealism painter.

Since it is impossible to provide a detailed overview without a super long summary of all twenty nine different stories, I will briefly describe how it starts and how it ends.

Story overview:
---------------
We begin with Hor; a man who is unable to speak in anything other than a whisper. He lives in a house with endless rooms. The only windows are ones that open into the next room, which looks just the same as the former. He lives off a yellowish, slightly transparent substance that resides on the walls and columns.

Hor claims to have kept a faithful record (I assume he means, mentally,) and then the following twenty eight stories unfold. When we come to the last story we find ourselves in a snow-covered plain. In the midst of the plain are the ruins of a wall. In the wall is a closed door. The peculiar thing is--other than a door appearing in a wall in the middle of nowhere--one can easily walk around to simply see the other side of the door. It is as if it only goes from one side of the wall to the other.

Two sentries keep guard to prevent anyone from entering or leaving. That is, until one day when a young man, accompanied by a Princess--by her bidding--ventures inside. His mission is to find and destroy her evil brother that lives within, and this brother's name happens to be Hor.

My thoughts:
-------------
Very interesting stories. Deep, insightful, sometimes confusing, yet wonderfully intriguing. I particular liked the story of the man being guided across a desert only to end up an old man when he finally meets his fianc, who sets out to find her fianc not knowing it is him. The twist was that he too saw an old woman greet him before his adventure, which obviously was the same woman. Yes, I know, it is strange, which is why I do not suggest this for the modern "only" reader. It is very esoteric in a sophisticated sort of way, if that makes sense. In other words, do not pick this up for light and easy reading. Pick it up to be fascinated and confounded. If you find dreams interesting, than this book is for you.

Things to consider:
------------------
This is probably not appropriate for a younger audience. Aside from the fact that most modern youth would be bored by the third page, there are some adult themes here: a few references to nudity, some to sexual situations, and some slightly crude. There are also several disturbing scenes such as the man with a doll-like face who devoured human viscera (intestines) from a bowl. But these things take on the creative form that makes sense for these dream-like tales. I would say later teens and older. Not specificity target towards men or women.

A very good book
By A Customer
I read the book many times, and I know some of the stories from memory. The book has a very strong mood, and Ende's father's pictures are making it even more strong. Most of the stories are sad, and each of them is very thought-provoking. I recommend it for everybody, who likes Ende's other writings.

A journey into mind
By P. Murray
I read this years ago, now, and regret selling my copy. I am looking for another copy, to keep. I remember how the very final *word* in the book caught me by surprise, left me gasping for breath, although I suppose a more sophisticated reader would have seen it coming.
The book is a series of vignettes through which a number of themes are woven. For me, the most important among these was the idea of people trapped in stasis by their own cowardice - unwilling to change for fear that all their effort up till now will have been wasted. Reading this book was instrumental in eventually breaking me out of a religious group I was involved in, although I did not realize it at the time.
Have a read of this, and Edmund D Cohen's "The Mind of the Bible Believer".
