Named toKirkus ReviewsBest Books of 2015

The Newspaper Boy is a remarkable collection of memories and personal reflections of the deep emotional conflicts a young newspaper delivery boy, Chervis Isom, encountered while growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, in a time of racial strife and discord in the 1950s and early '60s. A quiet and shy boy, the young Isom was a reader, and it would be the written word he would turn to as he tried to make sense of his world.

Many of Isom's stories are tied to the "Southern Way of Life," a culture in which he grew up that assumed an inflexible white superiority represented by Jim Crow laws, laws that his father, a Greyhound Bus driver, was obligated to enforce in the face of a rising reaction by his African American riders that he neither understood nor tolerated. Isom's early adolescent views, shaped by his father's frustrations, are thrown into stark contrast as he is drawn to the positive influence of Helen and Vern Miller, a young couple from the Far North who moved onto his paper route, bringing with them alien ideas completely out of step with his own culture and teachings. Even though the Millers' views would clash with his own, they quickly became his favorite customers. Each Saturday they opened their door to him at collection time, inviting him in to politely discuss and debate the day's issues. Through the Millers' progressive approach to the growing racial unrest in Birmingham in the mid-to late-1950s, the young Isom gradually learned, in a series of fits and starts, advances and setbacks, to question the prevailing cultural attitudes and biases towards the African American community. In the end, he would come to understand the simple truth, as expressed by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., that people must be judged not "by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." Isom's narrative tells the story of good, church-going Southern people bound up in the Jim Crow culture of their time, completely ignorant of the African American experience.

It tells of the value of hard work and education and the importance of the written word to change us for the better. His story is replete with his gratitude to the Millers, who took the time and effort to lead him to a better place, to Abe Berkowitz, who saw in Isom something he had not seen in himself and the man who would one day become his law partner, and finally to his father, as he belatedly came to recognize the importance of his father's role in making him into the man he turned out to be. This book shows how a single person (or a couple in the case of the Millers) might, in a quiet and unobtrusive manner, set a young person's life on a higher arc; how it falls to each of us to use our own talents to lead young people to embrace the "better angels of our nature." Isom's story is set in Birmingham, in an urban neighborhood known as Norwood, and stresses the vital role that "community" plays in our human development, and our need to continually rebuild and revitalize our communities.

And finally, while this is the story of a young man coming of age in a difficult time and place, the author is now seventy-four years of age. His story has been written from the perspective of a man who now appreciates the journey that brought him to this time and place, and who eagerly anticipates the life that yet lies before him and the mission he has carved out for his own future.

A Liberating Coming of Age Story
By Charles L. Kinnaird
The Newspaper Boy, by Chervis Isom, is a well-written and entertaining memoir, subtitled, “Coming of age in Birmingham, Alabama during the civil rights era.” The book is fascinating on several different levels. It is delightful and engaging as a story about a boy growing up in a working class family, going to school, discovering girls, and getting his first job delivering papers. It is also an important first-hand account of an historical time in the city of Birmingham. In reading Chervis Isom’s memoir, I gained a much clearer picture of what was happening in Birmingham during those days leading up to the civil rights movement. I learned important details about how local government was structured, and how speeches by a rabble-rousing Ace Carter of the White Citizens Council revved up the populace in an attempt to preserve segregation. I also learned about the important work of some open-minded civic leaders such as David Vann and Abraham Berkowitz.

It was inspiring for me to read about how an ordinary young fellow growing up in a society steeped in racism began to question a way of life that had once been accepted without question. It is a story about being able to listen to another point of view and thereby beginning a slow process of change. It is a story about how a liberal arts education can propel a young college student to approach life with a much broader view. It is a story about quietly finding liberation from the shackles of cultural ignorance.

The Newspaper Boy is a thoughtful reflection of a life lived during times of change. It is also a book that is important for our time as we face new hopes and challenges for building a city that works for the benefit of all.

By Anna Maria
The Newspaper Boy is a wonderful memoir that accurately depicts one of the most horrific eras in Southern history, written by an author who sat on the sidelines of that history, as a witness, while in his heart, he struggled to justify the Jim Crow culture from which he sprang against the teachings of a kind woman, his newspaper customer, who counseled him over two years to see a different way The author's emotional and humorous descriptions of his coming of age, his family and his newspaper customers add levity to a most tumultuous time. History without the boredom. An easy read yet very informative.

Wonderful book! Great insight into how times were during the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham through the eyes of a young white boy. Lighthearted yet a deeply moving book showing growth, education, friendship and a softening heart as this boy becomes a man.

Pogue's macOS Sierra: A Clear, Comprehensive Manual -- Laced with Wit
By C J Singh
.
Reviewed by C J Singh (Berkeley, California)

Pogue's macOS Sierra: “The Missing Manual: the book that should have been in the box” is an apt subtitle of this comprehensive book. This updated edition covers all models with macOS Sierra software. I enjoyed reading the earlier editions of this comprehensive book, learning a lot from David Pogue’s lucid expository style laced with humor. The Current Update retains all of the earlier features. Great! Here are some examples of Pogue’s writing style that has made this book a world-wide bestseller. Chosen from the beginning, middle and end of the book, all page numbers below refer to the Current Edition: the macOS Sierra.

“Beginning with Sierra, Apple no longer calls the Mac operating system ‘OS X.’ It’s now ‘macOS.’ That’s partly because Apple sought consistency with the software in its other products—iOS and watchOS—and partly, no doubt because it was tired of hearing prounounce it ‘Oh ess sex’ “ (page 1).

“When you write a book like this, you do a lot of soul-searching about how much stuff to cover. Of course, a thinner book, or at least a thinner-looking one, is always preferable; plenty of readers are intimidated by a book that dwarfs the Tokyo White Pages. On the other hand, Apple keeps adding features and rarely takes them away. So this book isn’t getting any thinner” (page 4).

“Handwriting Recognition: In the same way your grandmother turned yesterday’s dinner into today’s sandwich and tomorrow’s soup, Apple recycled the handwriting technology of its failed Newton handheld and added it to macOS Sierra, It’s now called Ink, and it does exactly what it used to: turn your handwriting into typed text in any program. Can Ink replace the keyboard? Not for anything more than quick notes, that’s for sure. But it can be handy when you’re web surfing, sketching, filling in database forms, and so on” (page 253).

“Maps: When Apple brought its own Maps app to the iPhone in 2012, the underlying databases had a lot of problems. They didn’t include nearly as many points of interest as Google. Addresses were sometimes wrong. Satellite view showed bridges and roads melting into the sea…. You can now look up an address on the Mac and then wirelessly shoot it over to over to the phone for navigation in the car, for example”(page 433).

“Setting Up Messages: There are some great chat apps that Messages can’t touch.… Skype, the granddaddy of all chat programs, which offers audio and video chats like Messages, but also connects to Skype running on Windows, iPhones, Android phones and so on” (page 754).

The publisher, O’Reilly Media, has rightly claimed:
“The Missing Manuals are witty, well written guides to computer products that don’t come with printed manuals (which is just about all of them). Each book features a handcrafted index; cross-references to specific page numbers, not just ‘see Chapter 14’; and an ironclad promise never to put an apostrophe in the possessive pronouns ‘its’.” As a professional editor and writer, I admire this promise because I find far too many recent books commit this particular error. Not you, smart reader – smart user of the smart iPhone.

The book comprises 20 chapters and 4 appendixes as follows.

Part One: The macOS Desktop
1. Folders, Windows & Finder Tabs
2. Organizing Your Stuff
3. Spotlight
4. Docks, Desktop & Toolbars

Part Two: Programs in macOS
5. Documents, Programs & Mission Control
6. Data: Typing, Sharing & Backing Up
7. Dictation & Siri
8. Mac + iPhone: Continuity & Airdrop

Part Three: The Components of macOS
9. System Preferences
10. Nitifications
11. The Free Programs of macOS

Part Four: The Technologies of macOS
12. Accounts, Security & Gatekeeper
13. Networking, File Sharing & AirDrop
14. Graphics, Fonts & Printing
15. Movies & Sounds

Part Five: macOS online
16. Internet Setup & iCloud
17. Mail & Contacts
18. Safari
19. Messages
20. FTP, SSH, VPN & Web Sharing.

Part Six: Appendixes:
A. Installing macOS Sierra
B. Toubleshooting
C. The Winodows-to-Mac Dictionary
D. The Master Secret Keystroke List

Yes, the 861-page book is heavy, but its numerous light touches, detailed "hand-crafted," index and "Power Users' Clinic" merit it five shining stars.

Excellent Book, Very Thorough on Apple Integration Technology
By TangoZulu
Very thorough and clearly explained. I have several books on this operating system, and I found them all to be too elementary, incomplete, or in a few cases too difficult. This one was just right for me. I have learned a great deal, and every time a pick it up I learn a little bit more. It is especially strong about how to take advantage of the impressive product integration which is a strong point of Apple operating systems and devices. I was making much better use of my devices and computers after reading just a few chapters, and I discovered features and capabilities that I never even knew existed. The author gets directly to the point...he is not trying to be cute or entertain you, and he does not speak down to you like you were an idiot. The organization and index are very good. You can go directly to a topic and each section is complete. You do not have to read the whole book; you can just use it as a reference for what you need.

Pogue is awesome. (and funny) I bought my first "missing manual" book with my first ever computer years ago and went from newbie to someone friends come to for help in a year. I buy a new one occasionally to have as a reference book for anything that crops up that I need to dig deeper into. Indispensable.

From Publishers Weekly
Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter's belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book—such as learning to listen or letting go of the past—his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g., $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime. While Goldsmith's advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. (Jan. 2)

From Booklist
By now, the CEO as celebrity is old hat. (Just start counting the books from former company heads.) That goes for the executive-recruiter-cum-president-makers. What has yet to be explored--until now--is the celebrity business coach, the individual who helps C-level executives correct flaws, whether invisible or public. A frequent interviewee in major business magazines like Fortune, Goldsmith, with the sage help and advice of his collaborator Reiter, pens a self-help career book, filled with disguised anecdotes and candid dialogue, all soon slated for bestsellerdom. His steps in coaching for success are simple, honest, without artifice: gather feedback from appropriate colleagues and cohorts, determine which behaviors to change (and remember, Goldsmith specifically focuses on behavior, not skills or knowledge), apologize, advertise, listen, thank, follow up, and practice feed-forward. Admittedly, this shrewd organizational psychologist only works with leaders he knows will listen, follow advice, and change--especially considering that he doesn't receive fees until improvements are secure and visible. On the other hand, these are words and processes anyone will benefit from, whether wannabe manager or senior executive. Barbara Jacobs

Misleading title; should be called "how to be less of a jerk"
By Alex
I suppose it's my own fault for not researching this book more carefully. Based on the title, I thought it would be about how the habits or activities that lead to success in lower levels of a person's career might become less important or even limiting later on in their career, and how to deal with that. Like how a manager needs to act differently from an individual contributor, or how a middle manager needs to act differently from a line manager. That's not what this book is about. This book is about how talented people who are arrogant jerks can become nicer in order to progress in their careers. That's useful if it's what you're looking for, but it's not what I was hoping to find.

As a corollary, I also felt the author perceived the world with a "cop's fallacy". Police officers sometimes assume everyone in a certain neighborhood or of a certain demographic is scum, because they are only called in to deal with crime, so most people they deal with in that neighborhood or demographic are criminals. Much in the same way, Goldsmith seems to believe that all successful people are arrogant and overconfident, when the truth is more likely that successful people who are not hugely arrogant do not lead their employers to hire a consultant like Goldsmith to fix their behavioral issues, so he doesn't interact with them.

Just Shut Up & Say Thank You
By Mark Raciappa
So much of our stress (in life & business) and conflict could be avoided if we simply followed the advice in the title above. This was one of the really outstanding points in this book that I can benefit from. The author has the experience, stories and track record helping successful people implement positive change in their behavior and now, you and & I can apply the same learning. Some of the other key points that jumped out at me:
1. Avoiding a bad deal is sometimes better than closing a good one;
2. The fallacy of "added value";
3. The "playing favorites" test;
4. The four commitments we must make today to move forward;
5. The daily "baker's dozen" questions;
6. How to implement the process of "feed forward";
7. The "eight rules" with #8 being my favorite: "The best time to change is now. Look at the time line - sanity does not prevail. There's a good chance that tomorrow will be as crazy as today."
8. What would the "95-year old you" say to the "you of today"? ( a very powerful exercise that stopped me in my tracks.)

While the examples of Goldsmith's work focus on his success with "high-powered" CEO's and corporate leaders, the principles are applicable to all (humans) regardless of career or social status. I recommend this book highly and believe that more and more insight will be gleaned from subsequent re-reading. So go get it, read it, study it, re-read it, use it. If in doubt, refer to rule #8 above.

Exceptional
By Reasonable Reviewer
There is an old saying that it is not failure that trips us up, it is success.

Mr. Goldsmith's book certainly bears that out.

The fundamental premise of the book is that highly successful people can get caught in ruts that are invisible to them, but painfully obvious to those around them. In turn, these ruts prevent success at the current level and further upward mobility.

Goldsmith points out that successful people tend to spend more time contemplating their successes and not focusing on their failures. Successful people then often miss the opportunity for self improvement that might come from a more unvarnished look at one's own performance.

The book includes a myriad of examples and some great, common sense insights.

I highly recommend this book.

In service,

Rich

Food from Many Greek Kitchens, by Tessa Kiros

No one captures the spirit and soul of a place quite like Tessa Kiros, the best-selling author of Falling Cloudberries and Apples for Jam. Who better than Tessa to take readers on a colorful and magical journey into the kitchens of her friends and family in Greece.

Food, culture, celebration, and memory are inexorably tied together inside Tessa Kiros's Food from Many Greek Kitchens. As the follow-up to her best-selling Venezia and Falling Cloudberries, Food from Many Greek Kitchens explores Kiros's Greek-Cypriot heritage and takes readers on a colorful journey into the Greek kitchens of her friends and family as she catalogs the traditional foods for fasting, festivals, and feast days.

Recipes like Vassilopitta New Year Wish Cake, Lamb in a Flowerpot with Dill and Red Wine, Yamopilafo Wedding Rice, and Easter Soup are accompanied by short introductions that explain each dish's cultural significance. In addition, lavish full-color photographs take readers on a tour from the local Mediterranean fishmongers and markets into Greek family homes and kitchens to experience the best in authentic Greek cooking.

With a glossary and more than 200 classically prepared Greek recipes, Food from Many Greek Kitchens adds a greater depth of flavor to each dish through Kiros's warm anecdotal introductions like the following passage for Vassilopitta:

"In Greece, everyone has a vassilopitta (cake) at New Year. The wonderful thing about this cake is that a flouri (coin) is added before baking. If you're lucky to get the piece with the coin, you'll be blessed for the year. Don't you love that sense of celebration the Greeks have?" --Food from Many Greek Kitchens

About the Author
No one captures the spirit and soul of a place quite like Tessa Kiros. She was born in London, to a Finnish mother and a Greek-Cypriot father. The family moved to South Africa when she was 4, and at the age of 18 Tessa set off to travel and learn all she could about the world’s cultures and traditions, and new ways of living and eating. She has cooked at London’s The Groucho Club and in Sydney, Athens, and Mexico. On a trip to Italy to study the language and food, she met her husband, Giovanni. They now live in Tuscany, with their two children.

Excerpt The smell of a Greek manavi (green grocers) . . . especially old-style ones or on the islands re-blossoms each time I walk into one. It is a warm, extremely friendly, and comforting smell . . . like flowers, leaves, melons, figs, meadows, orchards, the sea, and sweet life all rolled into one shop.

Simple and authentic
By XtinaLouisa
Having just returned from three glorious months in Greece I was keen to be able to reproduce some of the wonderful dishes I tried while I was there. This book is a feast both visually and inspirationally. The recipes are straightforward and use recognisable ingredient names. There are sensible suggestions throughout the recipes like, "add more water if it looks like it needs it" or "cook until the garlic and onion smell good".

The photos are truly beautiful and make you want to just sit down and browse through this book for the sheer pleasure of it.

What I like most of all is that the name of the dishes are first written in Greeklish (using the Anglo alphabet) then in English and finally, in smaller print, using the Greek alphabet.

I have bought a number of Greek cook books, but I have found this one the most accessible and true to my experience of Greece and Greek cooking. Congratulations!

A Journey Into Greek Food and Culture
By Books and Chocolate
This is a cookbook that is also a journey into Greek culture with many beautiful photographs along with the author's personal anecdotes about the food and celebrations of the region.

Authentic Greek recipes are included for appetizers, soups, main dishes, breads, salads, and desserts. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the recipes weren't as complicated as I thought they would be and with a few exceptions contain ingredients that can be found in larger grocery stores. The exceptions (for me) are the five recipes that use octopus, squid, or rabbit; ingredients that my local grocery store doesn't typically stock. There are also several recipes for lamb which may be easier to find but tends to be more seasonal in my area.

I've tagged several recipes to try such as Fried Tomato Fritters, Baked Feta Cheese, Olive Bread, and Baked Fish With Tomato. I did make the Yiaourtopita (yogurt cake), a simple, moist cake made with Greek yogurt that pairs well with any kind of fruit for a light dessert.

While this cookbook probably won't be my go-to source for everyday cooking, it does inspire me to try some new dishes from an ethnic cuisine I'm not familiar with.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

Best Greek Cookbook
By George Erdosh
This exceptional cookbook is really three books in one: a true cookbook, a photographic art book and a reading-for-pleasure book. It excels in all three. The photographs, mostly full page but some spread to two-page foldouts, are spectacular, all related to food and cooking and most taken inside the kitchens and dining rooms of simple Greek folks, some outside and in their gardens. The writing is so good that you may just want to sit down with the book and read the recipes simply for reading pleasure. The author avoided a long prologue and an introduction; the usual reminiscence of childhood food inspiration is mercifully missing. A list of the Greek alphabet and a two-page glossary to helps you understand Greek food terms (even such obvious term as feta cheese), the book starts unceremoniously with the first recipe.||Most of the recipes are authentic from Greek kitchens but it also includes such non-Greek items as French fries. It helps to have a Greek market source for some ingredients yet most recipes use items you'll find in any well-stocked market. The author is careful to give alternative ingredient if Greek is not available. The recipe writing is unusual that the author doesn't follow the traditional step-by-step style in the instructions but a light narrative style; nevertheless, recipes are very easy to follow, and even novice cooks will have no difficulties. The layout of recipes is excellent; all carefully place on a single page (with a few exceptions of longer recipes). The head notes are informative with bits of personal touches. Occasional short written vignettes from the Greek lifestyle are amusing amd enlightening.||With some 115 recipes, your choice from traditional Greek foods through baker's foods to There + Then foods (long cooking or roasting foods) is ample. Some are surprisingly simple (watermelon and feta), most are moderately complex and only and with an occasional recipe will you spend more than an hour in preparation. Each recipe title is in Greek (using English alphabet), in English, and in Greek alphabet. Note, that Greek food is not light and many recipes you will avoid if you are on a strict diet.||The subject index is also very good. This book is a wonderful addition on any serious cookbook shelf.
